Steam Controller not recognised? or am I doing something wrong?

Hey guys,

just got a steam controller a few days ago and thought I'd give it a shot in ED. I have been using my saitek x55 to great enjoyment but figured it would be nice to play from the couch occasionally too.

Problem is, when I launch ED from steam (via big picture mode) I don't see the Advanced Control Pad preset in my control options, only Keyboard/Mouse, Saitek x55, Empty, and Custom.

Am I doing something wrong here?

Many thanks,

CMDR Ahxyn

Yup same issue. I have a joystick but I realized my steam controller would be great for this game. But it doesn't even recognize it. Even if I set it to mouse. It doesn't pick it up. And I don't get the option for any other controller types in the option. I think I have keyboard, mouse and keyboard, blank and custom its pretty frustrating bc I see online some folks have been able to set if up effortlessly and I'm sitting here . at least I'm not the only one.

I'm in kind of the same boat here too. I was going to try and setup my steam controller just to drive my srv in the horizons beta and use keyboard mouse as usual for flight. I initially could not get elite dangerous to recognize the controller, tried restarting the game a couple of times. I went into steam and opened big picture mode, checked everything was up to date and also ran the support test that checks all the inputs. All was up to date and working. I then re-added my elite launcher to steam.

(FYI - I run the game through the launcher with steam overlay - game is added as a non-steam game. I am also trying all this from the beta for horizons, i have never tried it in the base game, but i do remember having this issue with another game when i first got it. sorry cant remember which one - maybe it was elite LOL. it was something i didn't care to troubleshoot at the time so it was never resolved then either).

When I restarted the game one more time, it now at least recognized that I had a controller connected as it gave me a bunch more options in presets for different control pads. However, none of them work. Because the game isn't recognizing the joystick or either trackpad. It just sees a few buttons like the right trigger is set as Mouse 1. So to me it's like the game is just seeing it as a standard mouse.

Elite Dangerous and Steam Controller as non-Steam game

I just started trying to get the Steam controller to work with Elite and ran into this same problem as well.
I've added the Elite launcher as a non-Steam game [I don't have a Steam key for Elite] and I'm launching that from Big Picture mode in Steam.
From what I can tell, the Steam controller is staying in Desktop Configuration mode, since it's behaving like a mouse and keyboard. I can open the overlay and access the advanced controller setup within Steam, but this has no effect within the game. I also tried to re-program my default Desktop Configuration but that doesn't seem to be saved, so couldn't get that working either.
It seems like Steam isn't recognizing that the game has been launched, even though my status shows 'In game: Elite Dangerous', so it doesn't switch the controller over to an in-game configuration.
I have seen people talking about using the controller with Elite, but I'm assuming they are using a Steam key version and not running as a non-Steam game.
Anyone have any information or at least a verification that my assumption is correct?

Thanks.

Is there any update to this issue?

I have just purchased a steam controller. I have the non steam version of Horizons. The steam controller does not recognise the game (as in the posts above).

So far I have added the Launcher to steam as a non steam game, realised that that was wrong, removed it, added EliteDangerous64.exe to steam as a non steam game, and... hit a brick wall. Setting advanced joystick in the options does nothing.
I was using a Dualshock 3 pretending to be an Xbox 360 controller to control the game up 'till now, so getting the steam controller to work isn't vital, but has anyone got one to work?

Also, what should I be backing up before messing about with stuff. Is there a config file containing my custom joypad settings that I can ferret away?

Just got a steam controller too to use with non-steam Elite... anyone else get this working? As mentioned above, at the moment all the Steam controller wants to do in Elite is pretend to be a mouse and keyboard...frustrating...

I was hoping this device would be a good games controller made by Steam/Valve...but I am starting to realise now...it actually is a "Steam-Controller"

Uhm it's working fine? I've been using it since I got it at release.

Are you guys using the steam version of Elite? I do, and there's lots of binds and such for it.

I eventually made my own Steam Controller preset file, for convenience.

If you don't want to use the Steam version you can put the controller file as a template in the Steam controller directory.

But really, you should find the post on the support forums, and have them help you.

It's been a while since I worked on this, but IIRC it ended up working once I went in and started customizing the controller. I think I had to load a preset first and then after that it started working. My memory might be a bit fuzzy, but it had something to do with changing off the default configuration. Sorry I can't be more helpful. If I get a chance I'll fire it up and see if it jogs my memory.
