Steam, Epic Games, Frontier? Confusion for a former console player.

I am building my gaming computer this week, mainly so I can continue my ED career in Odyssey (hopefully with an account transfer from Xbox). I won't bore you with the computer specs (unless someone want me too).

As stated in the title, I was a console player and used Xbox Live and Playstation Live to connect to Frontier servers. Obviously, I cannot cannot connect to Frontier servers with a PC through Xbox Live and Playstation Live. So my question is: How do I connect to Frontier servers to play the game? Do I go through Steam, Epic Games, or Frontier? Is one better than the other two? What are the annual costs for each? I ask these questions since I've never "gamed" on PCs before.

Thank you in advance for your time in this matter.

I believe when you do the console transfer you need to have already created a frontier store account first, so your new (free) version of Elite Dangerous will be on Frontier's site not through Steam. This is a good thing, Steam just adds more complication in my opinion, best to go through Frontier themselves. Epic has more problems with slower updates etc so I wouldn't worry about Epic. There are no recurring or annual costs with frontier, or steam.

Once you have your commander etc all copied over to a pc account you can then buy Odyssey on the frontier website for that pc account. But I wouldn't worry about doing that until you have your console player copied over to pc and you have the new base game working on your new pc.

Thank you for the information and links. I'll go through Frontier then. Now I am crossing my fingers, hoping I do the PC build correctly.
Again, thank you.

The Frontier launcher is very slow on updates compared to Steam.

It gets that there's an update; it's just painfully slow to update.

There are no charges on PC to access the internet. Subscription services on PC charge you for access to the game, not to play it online.

Thank you for the reply.
If I am understanding correctly, once I get ED from Frontier, I can access the ED servers without paying subscription fees (unlike Xbox and Playstation). This is news to me. Lol. I've been paying $200.00 a year to play online. This is an eye-opener.
Again, thank you for enlightening me.
