Newcomer / Intro Steam is down - how can I launch ED?

Steam aren't connecting and as such I can't launch ED. The launcher opens but when I try to log in manually it sais I need to purchase or redeem ED. How can I get around this?

Steam : error code 118

Elite launcher tells me I do not have the game installed
And I never use Steam for Elite.
Might be a coincidence that both are down?.

I too am in now, still connection issues with steam but clicking the "steam log in" button managed to get me on the launcher so I could press play.

Elite launcher is functional again for me.
Steam is online again too.
