Steam Key/Entitlement LEP Holders

Is there any way for a Lifetime Expansion Pass holder to get a steam key/entitlement for Odyssey? I understand that it is tied to our accounts after we login with the launcher but being able to take advantage of the steam servers for content and updates would be really nice for those of us who play E:D more sporadically.

Have you tried generating a steam key? (this page has pics https://customersupport.frontier.co...-install-it-in-the-launcher-What-should-I-do- ) - if it doesn't work then there is a link to contact Support at the end of the page.

I am aware of that and have that enabled. But as far as steam is concerned, I don't own odyssey so (to my understanding) I need to always download and update odyssey through the launcher rather than steam itself. Which is pretty tedious when a patch came out in the past week or two and I want to play now but need to wait because there was no "background" update.

Or did this get updated and I just need to re-link everything to have a key added to my account?

Steam has a background update feature? Why is my Steam always updating the game only and exclusively in the foreground, making me wait...
Live games get weird. But, generally speaking, developers provide a build to steam that may be a few days out of date but can take full advantage of Valve's content servers and allow you to just force update by going to Library->Downloads in Steam. It might not be the current build, but it means you are downloading comparatively small patches through the launcher rather than entire expansions. This is why there is usually chaos at the start of a Path of Exile league where people argue over whether it is faster to use the steam or GGG client as GGG will get the content sooner but Steam will deliver it faster.

In the case of ED, it would be really nice if I didn't have to wait an hour or two for all the frontier servers stuff to resolve and finally download however many gigs of updates there were since the last time the mood struck me. Because I haven't played Odyssey since the beta (?) because by the time I launch the launcher I actually want to play rather than sit and stare at a progress bar overnight.

Is the only time you launch Steam when you want to play Elite? I ask because I have Steam running almost all the time and my installed games update automatically.

Had my support ticket responded to: looks like the answer is "get f'ed for buying an LEP" since Frontier will not provide a steam partner key to purchasers. meaning those who were dumb enough to give Frontier money ahead of time for an expansion pl;an that changed almost overnight have a worse experience than those who buy the game on sale.

Ah well. I guess this frees up some hard drive space at the very least.

Colour me confused...

You have an LEP - you can link your account to Steam - you launch the game in Steam - surely you have Odyssey available to select on the launcher. Didn't the same thing happen when Horizons was separate? How can the Horizons DLC have worked but the Odyssey DLC doesn't?

(I have not linked my LEP to Steam and I would never consider doing so.)

P.S. No idea why this first-world problem is in the newcomer's sub-forum.

Again: The issue is not access to Odyssey. The issue is access to the steam content servers rather than needing to do everything through the Frontier launcher through Steam. I have significantly better speeds from valve's content servers than I do Frontier's and I very much value being able to have background updates rather than needing to run the actual frontier launcher (and artificially inflate hours played).

And deepest apologies if this question is not valid for the questions forum. if it helps, I probably won't be back and will likely just write off the LEP as the same level of stupidity/lessons learned as my star citizen purchase ten years ago or whatever it was. That seems to be the model Frontier is taking anyway

Can I haz your lep?

Or more pertinent, are you accessing the whole game through steam? If so, do you have automatic updates on? If so I am a little puzzled.

I'm pretty sure that I'm just reiterating the above of most posters, but I also doubt that support told you to go away.

I ask this with utmost respect, but is English your first language, as it could be a simple misunderstanding. I hope the sjws don't go for me for asking, but I just want to try and help.

OP launches ED from steam, which launches the launcher, at which point they will need to update Odyssey if an update is required. Steam does not present Odyssey in the library, if it did it could keep it up to date in the background before choosing to play.

(I believe that's right)

Yup. Except that Steam does https://store.steampowered.com/app/1336350/Elite_Dangerous_Odyssey/

It is just that frontier don't want to provide steam keys for whatever reason and thus make an LEP a(ne even) worse value than just shopping sales.

I get that most folk will have problems with basic empathy but I have a lot of speed issues with the frontier content servers and thus would MUCH rather rely on Steam. Let alone the benefit of background updates while I am doing other stuff.

And, honestly, this is a horrible look for Frontier. I am not going to pretend that I thought they were doing good by the suckers with LEPs before this. But this is actively a worse experience because they want to migrate folk to the frontier launcher or want to inflate hours or are somehow using this for some NFT crap. It is Frontier saying they don't want me to play the game I bought and... it sucks but I guess that is what is going to happen. The good news is that the sunken cost fallacy of the LEP is already long since absorbed after it became clear FDev were moving away from the expansion plans they sold that on so...

I am SJW comrade #147458 who is on duty this week (we don't have orders just agreed on courses of action) and I am happy to say your comment passes SJW benchmarks, this week. Enjoy your un-cancelled life this week citizen!

To the OP - fair enough. I can't imagine it's anything malicious from FDEV, more likely to be incompetence but if it annoys you that much do what you think is best!

Probably I misunderstood you so apologies in advance if that is the case. I bought the LEP way back then before even Elite released in Steam. I linked my account to Steam and now I do all updates in Steam and play EDO in Steam aswell etc.
