Newcomer / Intro Steam key - what to do with legacy install?

Hi all

I got a steam key for Elite after starting again after a few years and finding my X-56 wasn't being recognised in the legacy Frontier version of ED. Installing the Steam version worked and I'm up and flying again. However, what do I do with the legacy install of ED? Both versions are on D - steamapps, and Program Files. If I uninstall the version under Program Files, am I going to brick my game?

Any advice welcomed.

What exactly do you call "Legacy version"?
Do you mean a game installed via the Frontier launcher? If so, it is not installed in the Program Files (only the launcher itself is), but in Users/%username%/AppData/Local\Frontier_Developments\Products.
It's weird that it wouldn't recognize your HOTAS and I suspect it was something to do with the drivers rather than the game.

Or do you mean the old "base game" ED as Legacy? It has been kind of merged with the Horizons update under Steam so I suspect it automatically installs the updated version of ED+Horizons.

In any case, if you are planning to play the game via Steam (my preemptive condolences.), it should be safe to delete it from anywhere else (Most likely the AppData folder) and then uninstall the Frontier launcher.

.......

That is not exactly true - my game is in the Program Files (x86) tree, which is the first location F D refers to in it's faq - the appdata tree installation path is listed as "alternative version". (Someone said the choice between those two is made dependant upon the user being an "administrator" or not - don't know for sure.)

You can uninstall the "legacy version" if you wish - your commander progress is held server-side and your options are shared with Steam so they should be safe (binds, graphics, etc) - your journal log files are (should be) also shared and so safe, However, I would copy both those folder trees just to be safe.

Options:

%LOCALAPPDATA%\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options

Journal logs:

%USERPROFILE%\Saved Games\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\

Thanks - I do mean the Frontier Launcher. I bought the game from Frontier, well before it was available on Steam. The Steam version starts up the launcher anyway. Thanks for the advice re backup and uninstall.

hi, so far as i know, is elite dangerous ( basic game no SRV) and horizion ( with SRV) put together as one, the basic game. is no longer avaible, i have it ,since odyssey not in the launcher, it is gone. somewhere here in the forum. is some writing about the melting of this both titles. as a matter for start new addon odyssey, but the original title from 1984 still exist as download from the frontier page.

No you are wrong. You still have Elite Dangerous, Elite Dangerous Horizons as well as Elite Dangerous Odyssey in your launcher. You cannot have Odyssey without the others, they (or Elite Dangerous) is a prerequisite for Odyssey. Here in launcher and in downloadble products in store:
