Hardware & Technical Steam Machine from Alienware

SteamOS only, tuned experience, 450 USD, coming at the end of this year (November 2015)

I hope these machines sell reasonably well for FD ever entertain idea of Linux port.

Sadly, Alienware tells us it’s pretty much the same Alpha you could buy last year, complete with last year’s specs—a dual-core Intel Core i3 processor, GeForce 860M+ graphics and 4GB of RAM to start—but Alienware did at least get the message about the Alpha’s painfully slow hard drive and have replaced it with a faster 7200RPM model, and it’s still a decent amount of performance for the money.

I'd be interested to hear how the mobile GPU handles ED?

Well, I have laptop with 850M GTX right here, and I ran ED on it at max settings on Full HD with a bit of slowdown, sometimes performance dipping bellow 60 fps a bit (on Windows of course). So a) it can definitely run it quite well b) after 1.3 tweaks for shaders I am ready to bet it's even better. As it's Nvidia, driver problems should be minimal (for potential Linux version that is).

Well, if the XBone can run it, the Alienware alpha would have no problem.

I am more interested in the controller however, I wonder how will it fare with Elite.

Yeah, I would like to buy it when it's released to get some configuration sets going for other people.

Go and read the tales of woe in the Mac subforum. Therein, owners of shiny expensive machines are frequently weirdly surprised to discover that their computer is somewhat GPU limited, due to having a fairly old and non-replaceable GPU (all except for the Pro users, obvs, who get a decent GPU setup in a machine that only costs as much as a small car). That'd be your answer. FD are going great guns to make the game run on some pretty shaky-for-gaming setups, though.
