Newcomer / Intro Steam players: welcome to Elite: Dangerous

This is to welcome the new players from steam, and , well, all new players in general. First, I am a steam user since 6 years ago and truly I have barely opened my steam launcher since the day of ED´s release. This is to say that this for me is almost more than a game. Probably you can read far better posts about the game which will tell you that this is a game to learn slowly. It is to enjoy the acomplishment of YOUR OWN goals, as it happens with all good games. In that sense is an experience more than a game.
Here are my advices:

- play the tutorials, with special attention to the combat series. I didn´t finish the last ones, but at least the first six can give you a good idea of how to use your ship in combat before going out in the big space. It´s not so empty...

- I did some missions at first to get the money to improve my sidewinder. Then tried some bounty hunting and smuggling. When you get at least one million cr go for a cobra or viper. The first leads you to the way of trading. The second one is definitely your choice if you like combat (I know that there are players who would dissagree with this)

- Learn the ropes. Investigate the modules functions and their relation to power use. Ask here i the forums or do web searches. Most probaly all your questions have been asked already.

- Don´t get too obsessed about upgrading to a supposedly better ship. I spent 20 mill in a vulture that now is parked at a station while I have fun flying a viper that costs 4.3 mill. I got the money participating in a community goal, so I guess that´s a good way to make some money too. You can find the community goals going on at any time in this post

- Personally I enjoy the game far more since I have got involved with a group that supports the Alliance. I know that the factions themselves don´t create an emotional pull at the moment (something to be most probably addressed in the next patch). But it´s great to fight side by side with some other guys in a combat zone and getting systems turned

- Play your choice of music on the background (only when you grow tired of the great original music) and enjoy the experience. Many times I just have fun while travelling in supercruise and watching the views. I could even say now that it is a good way to learn some astronomy too. Whenever I look to the stars it won´t be the same for me from now on.

- I use a joystick and have made a three points cap to use with freetrack

(i still have to donate, damnit. The guys deserve it)

I had incredible fun while making it and it works perfect! The experience is definitely more immersive if you can move the cam with the movements of your head

also use voiceattack
http://www.voiceattack.com/

which is really convenient since there are too many commands to bind and I don´t think there´s a joystick where you can place them all. Best 8 bucks your gonna spend in a while and it´s fun to use and configure too

- Use headphones every now and then to deeply enjoy the sounds. The viper roars like a tiger

- Perhaps the best part is that this game is still a work in progress and we still expect many wonders of it (as you probably know, planetary landings, walking inside ships and stations... we have not yet found aliens...) FD mostly listens to the players afaik and you can tell that the guys are working hard to get this game as great as it can be. As an example, the improvements in graphic performance have been quite noticeable since the release.

- Last but not least, the people in these forums. I read interesting, fun, absurd, emotional, intelligent and many times acid posts here everyday. Any help you need you can have here for sure.

too many words and i must go to sleep. Have fun and see you in space
