Steam questions:

I installed steam on my old antiquated pc, bought NMS along with Elite Dangerous, and as of yet done nothing. Question is: My new pc hasn't arrived as of yet, If I install the game to the two USB 3.1's 64GB Flash Drives (one for each game) rather than install them on steam, can I than use the USB 3.1's Flash Drives to install the games on my new pc with out steam?

I can't speak for NMS (can that even be run outside Steam?) but for Elite then moving computers is no big deal as all your progress is kept server-side. You just need to copy your options and save game directories to keep your desired settings and your journal files. I don't have my E D installed in Steam - you don't need to, just download the installer from your Frontier Store account and install direct on your PC. I don't know about actually installing E D on a flash drive - would the data transfer rate not drive you mad?

good luck (y)

If you want to know where the above directories to copy to your new PC are:

%LOCALAPPDATA%\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\

%USERPROFILE%\Saved Games\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\

So even if you buy ED on Steam you don't need to install Steam to run it?

Correct.

Download the installer from your Frontier Store account page "My Downloadable Products" and install it on your computer. That way there isn't an installation in your steam library (it is listed but greyed-out) so it doesn't muck up any updates etc (like recently).

If, like me and many others, you have more than one account you just need one installation and copy the launcher for each account - same game installation, same options.

With NMS you can use the steam app to back up the game to a thumbdrive (note it won't do saves, but you can use steamcloud for that, or the saved game directory). Then just import the game onto the new PC.
All that really saves you doing is redownloading it.

Yesterday I went to the Frontier site and logged into my account, found the launcher and downloaded it. When I attempted to utilize it, it stated that I must copy paste a code from an email they send. I did that and the launcher than states that I need to purchase ED.

So, doing it prior to the way it is now probably worked, but it seems to have been nerfed.
