Steam required for beta access?

Here are the steps to access the Beta:
  1. Open Steam (you will need Steam downloaded to participate).
  2. Open Elite Dangerous in your library.
  3. Select 'Elite Dangerous: Horizons' on the Steam launcher (even if you do not own Horizons, Horizons will be enabled in the beta build).
  4. When the Elite Dangerous launcher is loaded, log in to your account if you aren't already logged in.
  5. On the launcher window you will notice three options; Elite Dangerous, Elite Dangerous: Horizons, Elite Dangerous: Horizons Fleet Carriers Update (Beta).
  6. Select Elite Dangerous: Horizons Fleet Carriers Update (Beta).
  7. Select launch.
  8. Start testing and have fun!

Will we really need Steam?

I have Steam, but don't play E: D through it and have no intention of linking it.

You dont need steam
It appears in the ED game launcher. If you look at the list scroll down it will be listed.

It only appears when beta is active, fdev can stop it appearing at the end of beta

When you first select it, it installs as a separate instance of your PC.

No. You do not need steam

"When the Elite Dangerous launcher is loaded, log in to your account if you aren't already logged in."

To be clear, I know how previous betas have worked. I just want some clarity on the statement quoted, as it specifically states that "you will need Steam downloaded to participate". I suspect the beta will work as previous ones have, but it would be nice to have this confirmed.

Doesn't exactly inspire confidence, does it. :-(

Right, this. I suspect it will work as previous ones have, but I don't recall Frontier ever explicitly saying Steam was required, as this one does.

From the official page in the official beta forum...
  1. Open Steam (you will need Steam downloaded to participate).
  2. Open Elite Dangerous in your library.
  3. Select 'Elite Dangerous: Horizons' on the Steam launcher (even if you do not own Horizons, Horizons will be enabled in the beta build).

That is one hell of a typo to last four lines :D

Haha, just wait and see. One more sleep.

Most of lines are relevant, it only the top steam one that's wrong.

Download and sync happens after you select it play normally

That said...looking back at the January update, it says pretty much the exact same thing. I did not participate in that Beta, so presumably it actually worked the way it normally does, in that it does not actually require Steam, even though the official post in the official forum indicates that it does.

Ah, I never thought to check. I also didn't bother with the last beta and haven't read any beta notes for a fair while. :)

I think the launcher is the same launcher regardless. I'm guessing the references to steam is more an innacurate synonym for "pc beta" in this case.

Yep. Said the same in the January Guide. So with any luck the only problem will have been that checking this out has just wasted half an hour of my life.

By the Far God, though, it makes you wonder when even the Beta Guide is bugged!
