SteamVR Beta - Motion Projection (Attenuation Smoothing) Filter Re-enabled

If you are using a WMR headset you are probably using the SteamVR to run ED. I have the HP Reverb G2 headset and it starts SteamVR whenever I boot up WMR.

SteamVR has a motion projection option which was disabled earlier in the beta (maybe also in the final release, but not sure). Steam updated the beta today and re-enabled motion projection in that version. Given the problems players are experiencing getting a decent framerate with Odyssey, it may be worth trying the SteamVR beta and enabling motion projection. To enable the SteamVR beta go to your Steam library and right click on SteamVR. There will be an option somewhere to enable betas. Then open SteamVR and enable motion projection.

For those who are not sure what motion projection does, it basically works like Oculus ASW by interpolating frames to create a smooth experience at low framerates. The following is a link which gives more information - https://www.roadtovr.com/steamvr-motion-smoothing-asw-alex-vlachos/

Cheers

It's actually called "Motion Smoothing" in SteamVR's control panel just in case anyone was getting confused.

Try setting Motion Smoothing to "Always Enabled". It will limit frames to half your headsets refresh rate but it does give your CPU/GPU twice as long to render the next frame plus it is slightly more efficient than SteamVR having to guess whether you will hit the next frame or not.

It is also perfect for seated experiences as the rotational positioning still runs at full frame rate.

Some people are more susceptible to lower frames than others though so, as always, YMMV...

Turning on motion smoothing for ED results in more stutter for me instead of less. It effectively cuts the framerate in half and then inserts fake frames.

Also, for anyone not using SteamVR betas the settings remain the same in between version upgrades.

Others have encountered the same issue and suggested that MS keeps trying trying to adjust the framerate hence the stuttering. Don't know whether this is true but a reasonable hypothesis.

Yup that's exactly what it is.

Once it detects that it can't hold up with the framerate, MS cuts the framerate in half and synthesizes the missing frames. I've found this typically leads to stuttering in many games.

Seeing as ED was never fully optimized for VR to begin with this issue becomes even more pronounced. I've done a bit of testing with MS on vs off and found that even at the lowest quality graphics settings MS will introduce some stuttering. In contrast, running the game at it's lowest graphics settings with MS turned off results in the game being able to meet all it's frametimes up to 144Hz. Which is a pretty interesting find since MS doesn't even kick in as long as frametimes are still within the green.
