SteamVR problem

Thats what I've been doing. I tried starting from steamvr, tried the start by pressing the "start from steamvr" option when you press play on steam. Nothing has worked.
No. Start the game in Steam in 2D then set it up for 3D in the game settings. Make sure your headset is plugged in.

Well... I've tried that too. There's no HMD option on 2D.
That's because it is not detecting the headset. I just tried the setting on my Reverb G2 and got the same as you, but it worked after I disconnected and reconnected it. Try exiting Steam and restart it. Or a system reboot.

I'm not seeing any settings in 2D mode. Even after restarting steam, my computer, and dc'ing and reconnecting my headset. I am using the OQ2 btw.

same thing happens
Sorry you're still having problems. Well Steam doesn't see the headset obviously and until it does VR isn't going to work. Is there anything you have to do with the Link cable, like install software? I sold my Rift, switched to the HP G2 and deleted my Oculus account after the Facebook account thing was announced.

idk why steam doesn't see the headset when steamvr does

I am just so mad, because I have tried pretty much all day to fix this. And nothings worked.
I feel your pain. Getting one company's hardware to work with a competitor's software is a frustrating business at times. I guess you've looked on reddit and the Oculus forums?

Yeah, right now I posted a thread on r/elitedangerous in hope that someone has had the same problem and fixed it.

Even after changing to the Reverb G2 the fun kept going when it was discovered it doesn't play nice with the USB on AMD X570 motherboards. Still not fixed 6 months later but there is going to be a bios update this month allegedly. Good luck in getting your headset working.

I think I had a similar issue at one point (I also moved to Steam after using Frontier's launcher directly), and I think it needed software to be launched in the right order: Virtual Desktop, Oculus software, Steam, SteamVR, then Elite (click on Play in desktop mode and choose launch in SteamVR mode). Afterwards, in fact, launching Elite from the Virtual Desktop interface in the Quest works well for me because it launches all those in the right order.

Another thing I did that could help you is change the "Current OpenXR runtime" to "OpenXR" or "SteamVR" in the SteamVR settings.
I took it from this when playing Flight Simulator: https://forums.flightsimulator.com/...gistry-use-openxr-loader-specs-instead/323323

Good luck.
