So as most of us have now noticed the newsletter told us (in a rather roundabout way) that single player offline will not be a thing. Note this is not another discussion thread!
While this is a shame, what Michael Brooks has said about the reasons for this has got me wondering.
What is stellar forge?
I always assumed it was a tool that can be ran outside of the Cobra Engine that generates everything necessary for a galaxy (eg. planet shapes, sizes positions, textures etc etc) but now I'm not so sure.
I guess what I really want to know is how much stellar forge is stored and run on my computer and to what extent is my client dependent on the server running stellar forge.
I imagine it is incredibly modular in nature (you wouldn't want to run galaxy generation code then star system generation code 400billion times and then the code to generate textures etc all in one go) so how does it work?
Will we see stellar forge used in any other Frontier titles? Is it a tool that could be used by developers and artists outside of Frontier? I don't imagine Frontier would want to share such an important and valuable tool but I'm just curious to what extent it is a standalone thing.
Frontier, you have my curiosity peaked. While I would have liked to have an offline Galaxy for those times when my rural internet connection (or video content binging siblings) render me unable to connect to the Elite servers (and I would have liked to see how smooth transitions are with the Galaxy somewhere on the same network as me) I am now more interested in finding out the limitations and capabilities of the tech behind it!
