Stepping down from active duty, farewell Elite Dangerous for now - Drew Wagar

Some of you may recall that I was involved in the initial 2012 Kickstarter for Elite: Dangerous in a small way. We had rather a lot of fun and games working out how to get some novels funded back then. Suffice to say, through the generosity of the fans, I, along with a number of other authors, were able to write official stories within a game we had loved since childhood.

Those stories have been well received by and large, they paint a picture of how we saw Elite: Dangerous at the time. For myself, I added some characters that people have been enthusiastic about, notably Senator Kahina Loren and Luko Prestigio-Giovanni. I'm truly gratified that folks have taken the trouble to write to me about how much they enjoyed their adventures and asking for more.

Things have moved on since and the game is evolving in new directions. Powerplay has set a new tone for the in game lore and there's the promise of new and exciting content to come. At this time there isn't an opportunity for me to inject more of my type of story into the Elite universe, so I'm taking a leave of absence for now. Perhaps the opportunity for sequels will come at some point and I'll be more than happy to help out.

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank Frontier, and all the fans for their support and generousity over the last two and a half years in giving me the opportunity and support to realise a long held dream of writing an official book in the Elite universe. I hope you all considered it was worth it, I certain did.

So, it's not goodbye, but it's farewell for now, as my blog explains. I have some other projects to work on.

Fly safe in the void, and, of course,

Right on, Commanders.

Cheers,

Drew.

I have to say Drew that it has been fun reading all of the books and meeting you and the other authors at the various conventions over the last couple of years.

Good luck with your new projects!

It was a pleasure meeting you at the launch event I still have your book to read. I hope your future endeavours reward you well but that you find your way back here from time to time

Sorry to see you going, I enjoy your blog and I've read your book three times so far, its clearly my favourite out of all the Elite books I have.

Not totally surprised to see more 84'ers leaving the sinking ship though, the contempt Frontier has for its original backers is shocking.

Sad news... and probably a foreshadow of things to come :(

Thanks for your time and effort put into bringing some great backstory to the world of Elite Dangerous, and for the mystery and intrigue you brought to the game a couple of months back with the puzzles and hints surrounding Lady Kahina, the Formidine Rift and the UA (even though the latter two got a bit mixed up in the end ;)).

It was probably the most vibrant and fun part of ED's short history so far, with the community eager to grab a mystery and run with it and get out and explore beyond the Rift!

Fly safe commander :)

Quite possibly.

I wonder if I can understand that, admittably not caring much about the lore. The game was now pushed into being more "flexible" with regards to stuff that happens in itsuniverse. People wanted to be able to change the course of the overall storyline. So the "big picture" is volatile, so no story-writing relying on political settings can be done anymore. Did I get that correctly?

Interesting, which implications all these changes can have. In MechWarrior, one acted within the storyline the books dictated. You could win battles, not wars. Elite: Dangerous seems to be the other way around, which is pretty bad for lore.

But... but... but... how will we find out any more about the Formidine Rift??? Or Lady Kahina??? Or anything else requiring ROT13 to decode? ;)

We'll see you when you get back. :)
