Stepping it up; Cobra to Asp.

Hi all,

I'm about to have enough coin in the bank to potentially step up my game,
but im not really sure if bigger = better at this point.

I currently posses a nice little cobra;
B4 Power Plant
C4 Thrusters
B4 Frame shift Drive
A3 Life Support
A3 Power Distributor
A3 Sensors
C4 16T Fuel Tank
B4 Shield Generator
E4 16T Cargo Rack (x2)
E2 4T Cargo Rack (x2)
A2 Shield Cell Bank
D2 Beam Laser (x2)
G1 Multicannon (x2)
I0 Point Defence
D0 Warrant Scanner

Total worth of 3,752,608cr according to my statistics panel.

I would carry the weapons and utilities over to the asp,
but it seems pretty much everything else will have to be upgraded from scratch.

The only thing im a little worried about is the Asp's maneuverability.
Can I still take it bounty hunting, or is it simply too fat and lumbering for that?
The wikia says both ships have a maneuverability of 6 (?) so they should fly the same?
If I upgraded the asps thrusters to a B-grade, would it feel like flying a cobra?

Yes.
Yes (mostly).
And...yes.

Addendum:

The "Yes (mostly)" is because a "6" maneuverability is a factor of total weight vs thrusters. If you have an empty cargo bay, D mods and A thrusters, it spins like a Sidey on ice.

If you have B mods, 80 tons of cargo, and E thrusters, it spins like a hippo with an inner ear problem.

I'm sure you already know, rebuy of the ASP is 300k just for the hull, plus you'll want a few modules so I'd suggest you have about 10 mil in the bank before upgrading to have an ASP worth running.

It's a good multipurpose ship though

I had 8mil worth cobra (all A modules and max class) and 7m in cash when decided to switch do Asp. And it was just to get some major modules to B/D. And left me with 1,4m in cash, 600k rebuy cost. It allowed me to start making money carefully and let me feel quite safe. I wouldn't switch earlier, but it depends on your risk attitude.

Hi all,

You'll need at least 12million to 15million to kit the ASP out in a similar fashion to your Cobra. Personally I would upgrade all your major class B modules to class A, not only are they superior in their functionality, but they also weigh less making your Cobra more maneuverable, faster and able to jump further.

The only thing im a little worried about is the Asp's maneuverability.

No matter what anyone says, a fully kitted out ASP does not feel or fly like a fully kitted out Cobra/Viper, (in maneuverability, speed and acceleration); I have a maxed Viper, Cobra and ASP that I switch between regularly.

The ASP has better power, better distributor, more weapons, (6 beams on an ASP is fun), and better shields and hull, but for pure bounty hunting this is all wasted; you spend a large portion of your time hunting for your next target and that means you need speed and acceleration, which the ASP is lacking in when compared to the Viper and Cobra.

I easily outstrip the ASP with the Viper and Cobra when bounty hunting on a pure efficiency basis and IMHO the ASP is nowhere near as much fun to bounty hunt in as the Cobra/Viper.

I smacked my hours old ASP into the side of a fed station and blew up costing me 350k in insurance. Be certain you have money enough for upgrading the ASP + some operational money before doing the swap. But boy does it pack a punch. With 2 beam lasers and 4 gimballed MC's it rips sidewinders and eagles apart in a few seconds max.

And with shield banks of certain size you are almost invulnerable in NPC fights.

And the cockpit view in the Oculus...... wow

I think the thing that i most liked about the ASP was the fact that you have a lot of power to play with and can mess around with loadouts till your hearts content.

6 Rail guns is something that will have you giggling like a schoolgirl the first time you try them.

It sounds awesome and has an awesome cockpit and is awesome for trading and bounty hunting and exploring and piracy...

So yeah, save up for an ASP. Its awesome :]

I want to clarify, just in case: you CAN NOT carry weps and equipment from one ship to the next. You will have to sell it all, and buy new when you get your Asp.

I just got into my Asp two nights ago, and am absolutely loving it. Fully kitted for combat, with 92T of cargo space, and I am having a blast doing whatever I feel like doing1

1) The only thing im a little worried about is the Asp's maneuverability.
2) Can I still take it bounty hunting, or is it simply too fat and lumbering for that?
3) The wikia says both ships have a maneuverability of 6 (?) so they should fly the same?
4) If I upgraded the asps thrusters to a B-grade, would it feel like flying a cobra?

1) it's not Cobra, but good enough thrusters (and light or no cargo) and you can make it spin on a dime.
2) yes, and no - it's not too "fat" for that. Aside cobra, one of my favorites in combat situations.
3) more or less
4) as per 3).

I really miss my 35 million Asp I had. Traded it in for a type 7, and some grind because I want a Python. Yesterday I bought a Cobra just to go hunting for some new trade routes, all A class stuff, and its like meh compared to my old Asp. Liked the prices though lol.

All in all I think the Cobra is a better bounty hunting ship.

Not that the Asp is slow or underpowered or anything, the issue is the repair cost.

Yes the ship's tougher than a Cobra but if your shields go down you're in a position where realistically you should now run because the cost you'll incur makes bounty hunting not worthwhile.

It also means if a ship runs you can't follow because the cost to your hull on an interdiction will again mean the bounty isn't likely to cover it.

It essentially means in an Asp you're better off going for quick easy (less fun) kills or you lose money. While in a Cobra you could have gone for the bigger more challenging targets.

Yes, Yes (if empty cargo, or could be even better as posted earlier), Yes (with bigger bottom, but wouldn't feel like heavier bottom).
I just love the ship - using it for Bounty Hunting & Exploring, 16-32t cargo hold for trading rares & occasional smuggling. Incredible cockpit view!

Only one thing annoys me - asp engine's loud propeller sound and no option to tune volume down for engine sound.

Excellent sig Kleem!

I think the ASP is the perfect six shooter for any outlaw, with lots of space for booty. Pretty good multifuction ship, repair is costly though.

hehe, tnx!

That is why I try to get rares anytime I can. With current prices for exploration data - bounty hunting will not make it to buy upgrades, but enough for maintenance. With rares & few anacondas per trip - upgrades are also possible.

Hmm, so the asp isn't much for going into "ugly" fights because repairs are costly.

So let me propose another idea;
Buying a lakon type 6, stripping for weight and maxing out FSD, turning it into a job lorry to make the moneys.
And then just keeping my cobra as a sportscar for the weekends, upgraded with trading profit, geared for the hunt.

Downside is always having to go pick up whichever ship I want though.. we need that ship delivery mechanic. :p
Maybe once im absolutely swimming in money, selling both and combining it into a decked little asp is an option..
