Ships Stepping Stone to a Python

I've been trying to work out what ship to get next; currently I have an Asp Explorer (120T loadout) and I'm found a trading run that's 1/2million round trip. I made about 9M last night in about 5 hours. My options are:
  1. Save up 22M for a Type7 (Coriolis) to continue the grind at 800k/trip
  2. Grind out imperial faction (how?) and save up 25M for a clipper (Coriolis)
  3. Grind out 60M for a python (Coriolis) with the Asp

My arguments for getting a Type7 (216T) early is that it'll be 800k per round trip which might speed things up... but my arguments against getting it is that it'll be 8 jumps (total) instead of 4, I wont be able to run away from interdictions and the shoddy budget space-cow thrusters will make docking take longer so in the long run it might have less credits per hour especially if I keep getting shot down.

The clipper is awesome;but I have never been to an imperial system let alone started faction and I think that since the A-Rated clipper is about the same spec and price as a budget python I think I'll be going for a python long term anyway.
Or maybe I should wait a few days for 2.2 and roll my ASP as a passenger ship and make millions with passenger missions?
Any thoughts/comments?

You sound very eager to "grind it out".

It depends on how much time you get a week, for me personally the quickest way to make the most of my time has been to do Community Goals. Take the 5% hit on selling the ship and buy one for the specific goal (BH or Trade).

For example I took 400T to the Walter CG, I'm in the top 50% and lined up to earn at least 10M if I stay there. Granted I'm in a Conda with 400 Cargo so it took 1 trip, but with a T7 you could do that in 2 trips.

Grinding out the Imperial faction is only worth it if you really really want the ships. You risk not liking the Clipper and feeling like it was a waste.

The Type-7 is getting buffed in 2.2 (released tomorrow), it'll carry more cargo and have more armour & shields. If you use Mines then you should have nothing to fear from interdictions from NPC's. (4 pips to shields, 2 to engines, mines take no WEP draw).

But if I were you in your budget I'd probably do what you said, gear my Asp for Multi-role, with decent shields & passengers. Try out the new missions and see if they're fun & rewarding. If not then you can make the choice on selling & getting a T7 or grinding rep.

if you enjoy the grind, a t7 will be an interesting trader with tomorrows patch.

if you don't enjoy it, don't do it, and use your AspE to do what you want. i earned my python with flying an AspE mainly.

one of my main sources of CR are stacked skimmer destruction missions from systems where i have good reputation with all faction - i play them with a DBS or courier or cobra mkIII and a srv, and enjoy them.

also, as above, take part in a CG - looks as if the current "Farewell to Walter Waldo" will end in high tiers with massive payouts - you could test a t7 there (and probably earn it back with a few runs).

It's a personal choice, so in the end it depends on what you like. Personally, I'd keep the Asp until I could get a Python. The Asp is just so versatile. And so is the Python.

The T7 is getting a few improvements for 2.2, but it's still just a big trade ship. I futzed with one for a while but couldn't seem to like it.

So I'd say keep the Asp, see what 2.2 brings mission-wise and etc., and work toward a Python. It is the most useful ship for all types of missioning, and it serves quite well as a trader, miner, even combat if engineered properly. You can even go exploring in it, if you bump up the FSD and have patience :)

I have a lot of ships. I still wind up in the Python half the time, because it's best for the job at hand.

For trading, I went from the T6 to T7 (and eventually T9). Interdictions are fine as long as you it's mostly A-rated with a couple of A-rated shield boosters. Four pips to shields and two to engines, and boost until you can high-wake.

'Hingies

I would try and keep your Asp (still access outposts / a little pew-pew / rank up with the empire) and get in a T7 till you have enough for a trade Clipper.

I only sold my Asp and trade Clipper to jump in a trader Python. Never looked back.

(But I did go and buy an Asp eventually!)

Fly every ship!

I recommend the Python, but when I was there where you are now, I want the Clipper. So I try to do every imperial missions, to get higher promotions, but I've got the 60 mill before I've got the rank for Clipper. So Python is the best choice. Otherwise the good python's price at least 100 million, because you want cargo racks, correct shield, good fsd, enough power, etc.
Try this site for your configuration (and for many other things): http://roguey.co.uk/elite-dangerous/ships/python/

The Type7 just got buffed when 2.2 launched yesterday.
You can now get it to haul 300T and a small shield for just over 20M credits, which sounds like it'll net you 1.2M per trip instead of 800K

I love my Python, it's not particularly good at anything but it truly is a jack of all trades and still requires only a medium pad. As someone who can afford to A-rate their Anaconda, I still end up doing everything except bounty-hunting in the Python.
Here's a cheap spec, 62M with the Li Yong-Rui discount and there are very few missions or roles you can't do with it:

There's no fuel-scoop but you the prospecting limpet controller isn't really that vital for mining, and with a 32T fuel tank it has a good range without a scoop anyway.
It's not quite viable in the build I just linked but a rank-1 overcharged powerplant will fix that, and I'd also recommend at least a rank3 dirty drives and extended FSD range from Felicity Farseer (1st engineer you'll encounter). If you don't have Horizons then you'll have to sacrifice jump range and fit a heavier powerplant, I'd probably suggest a 7D.

I put in about 10 hours doing passenger missions with my ASP; taking transporting missions between 500k to 1.5M and the occasional adventure mission for +7M and saved up enough to afford a stripped down Python. But Trading 250T at a time or stacking multiple passenger missions should allow me to save up the extra 100M to A-Rate the Python (including a few re-buys).

I made it to my Python using an Asp-X.
