Sticking With The Eagle Viable?

Hi All,

I've decided to stick with the Eagle and get it powered up as much as possible. I've already got a mass of 130 Tonne on it which is really helping. I'm planning on buying the toughest hull and best shields etc. If i just want to stick with the Eagle will i be able to do most things i want to in game. ie exploring and the occasional dogfight/PvP.

I have have a Cargo hold of 8 in one slot so i can do some delivery missions and the occasional mining if i fancy a change. My jump range is currently about 11LY so it seems to be quite good in a lot of areas. If i had the best weapons would i ever stand a chance in a fight against one of the bigger ships?

PS, i also really like the Eagle cockpit in VR.

Ive recently gone back to my eagle and done basiccally the same, Ive tricked it out nicely. I did try a viper for a while but i couldnt seem to make any progress (or money) ... no range ... not as manuverable ... really expensive fuel and repair costs, that was the biggeie for me ... I'd spend an hour playing the game and find I'd made a loos at the end of it after fuel and repairs.

Whereas with my eagle I'm having a lot more fun and at the end of the day that's what it's all about.

I think it is possible to do anything in any of the ships, but not necessarily very well. Shield Cell Banks help any ship tackle the big boys, so yeah, you should be able to equip an Eagle to do that specific task.
.
As for other tasks, you could do very basic exploration in a ship that only had 1 internal compartment (for a discovery scanner), but having more compartments for surface scanning, fuel scooping, shields and possibly field maintenance would make exploration a lot easier and more profitable in the same way that you can attack a ship with a single pulse laser, but several beams, multicannon and missile launchers will make it easier.

Eagle with SCBs is a formidable foe because of its manouverability. I did my bounty hunting in one for a while before retiring to explore the galaxy.

nobody need a 149mcredits ship in order to enjoy the game, if you have a good feeling with your eagle and have a good skill, you can stay in for mouths...

I did pretty much that in the Beta phase - I had fully kitted out Eagle with the best gear you can get.

It's a fun ship to fly, especially with a DK2, as you mentioned. Your strength is your manoeuvrability and speed - use it. But if you get caught (especially by multiple opponents) you will get shredded very quickly, no matter what hull and shield upgrades you have installed.

I've got mine pretty well pimped now and it's a blast to fly. A rated FSD, thrusters, shields, power and distributor, 2a shield charge and 2 tons of cargo for scooping high value loot. Boosts to just shy of 370. Could do with a little more firepower than 2 pulse and a multicannon, can't find overcharged for love nor money.

I'm now considering the option to return back to eagle. Bought a viper recently and it doesnt feel as good as eagle. Probably caused by the lack of those near-top upgrades I used to have on my eagle.(I really miss that triple boost) Though top speed is good really.

I am an Eagle fanboy. Currently testing the developer hint that optimal mass is key. Not every A class module is the best to have, although I would like it more if it was. D1 life support, A2 thrusters, A2 frame shift drive, A2 shields and best power plant and distribution. 8 tons of cargo, rail gun and two pulse laser. Thinking of switching the rail gun for a torpedo again. 15k CR power shot but takes down the unshielded hull of a Viper from 100 to 15 in one shot. Have to figure out which combination of shields and modules gives me the extremely fast shield reloading I once had. Not sure if it was the eagle. Guess you have to be at the exact optimal mass for half the shield recovery time.

I went back to the Eagle from the viper because I liked it better. I have gone to Cobra now though. I might get another Eagle and keep the Cobra

The eagle is a pure powerhouse,
yet the problem you will face during combat is the lacking speed for a combat ship.
You can take on NPCs fine most of the time,
yet elite NPCs know the secrets of FAoff and vipers n cobras have a speed advantage on you.

Regarding player bounty hunting, well it depends on the skill of the target,
if they know FAoff and their ship you will have a hard time.
The weapons are only small mounts, so you will have to focus on staying behind the target and coating it in photons.

For piracy the restrictive cargohold and lacking speed to run from authorities
is sometimes very borderline, and will make you leave valuable cargo behind.
since there is no space for a shield cell, if you want to pirate via interdiction.

Regarding your setup,
my intuition tells me, 130 tons is too much.
try n loose some weight on non critical modules for combat,
like the life-support n sensors.

Kudos for sticking with the hard choice.

It seems to be a good choice for quickly building up reputation with all sorts of mini-factions, as it can zip in and out of stations, and jump wherever you want, in short order. Not going to be a multi-trillionaire on trading though, just so we got that one out of the way.

Sure is. The Eagle is quite a formidable interceptor-style space superiority fighter, capable of punching well above its weight and engaging just about any ship in the game successfully. The main weakness is the fragility of the hull, which can be alleviated with bulkhead armor and/or a shield cell booster (which is a must if you plan on engaging larger vessels).

But the running costs are pretty low, as is the rebuy if you get it blown up, so once upgraded you can just enjoy it.

I still have my Eagle and fly it when I have that itch.
A-Rank the internals, get a weapon loadout you enjoy, and stay there until the universe collapses back on to yourself.

The Viper is a different beast all-together. I have one of those as well, and while it is less maneuverable, it has greater acceleration. That translates into very rapid vector changing, which is the idea behind that fighter type.

I cleared the Wraak/Raven missions a few times in Gamma with my Eagle. Doesn't get much bigger than taking out a few Elite Anacondas (without Security help as I fly with crime reporting off).

I used a stock sidewinder until u had about 500k in assets. Then upgraded to a viper.

When upgrading really pay attention to insurance. As well as usage costs. If you are having trouble be productive enough to keep your ship stocked, repaired, and fueled then you should downgrade like op. Ive had to that when i first started out.

I love the Eagle - such a great ship to fly.

A fully upgraded Cobra is hard to beat though...the jump range alone makes it worthwhile.

It's just too limited in both top speed and versatility - that single Utility slot in particular is a real drawback. But damn it's a fun ship.
