Still amazes me

I have been a Rift user for 2 months now and had already set off exploring when it arrived.
Anyone who has used the rift knows how amazing it feels when you get into the cockpit for the first time. :)
I'm in a Asp and the views outside are superb. Looking down between your feet through the windows while fuel scooping, watching the sun flares.
Discovering new planets and flying round them over and over again.
Skimming the rings of planets and dropping into them. Flying through the rocks and ice, how much more realistic they look than on a monitor.

Anyway, last week I was about 11kly out on the Perseus arm when I noticed the GRAND SIRIUS INTERSTELLAR EXPEDITION CG currently active. I decided I would head back, register and contribute to the CG (hopefully earn 15,000,000 extra credits).

I finally made it to Lembava on Saturday evening, selected Goldstein Port and set course.
It then occurred to me that I had not docked for over 2 months! Not to worry, surely it's like riding a bicycle...
Dropped out of SC, and saw the station for the first time through the Rift. After a few minutes of 'Wow, it looks pretty', boosted toward the station, requested Docking Permission and aimed at the 'Letterbox'. Upon entering the station, the sense of scale inside is mind blowing. I spent my allocated few minutes flying around the inside of the station checking everything out before finally docking. So much easier being able to see through the lower windows at the docking pad.

Anyway, I just wanted to say that even after 2 months of fairly heavy use, the Rift still has me hooked. I'm in it for the long haul. :)

Happy Rifting!
Lee.

how hard is it to set up oculus?is it glitchy in a game?im trying to see if the price is justified here

1. Very easy
2. Runs great as long as your pc is a gaming rig.
3. Put a price on the difference between playing a computer game about spaceships and actually being inside a spaceship that feels as real as the real world.

As Mulbin says, it's very easy. You could simply install the Oculus driver/runtime and fire up Elite. There are guides to tune the graphical settings.
As the CV will probably not be available for at least another 8-12 months, I'd buy it again.

Been playing ED with the Rift since last October, and still enjoying the experience.... just plain good.

Can't wait for Vive and/or CV!

At this point you should probably wait for a commercial version (unless you can find a good deal online from someone selling a used DK2).

The HTC Vive is scheduled to be released as early as November this year, and Oculus CV is March 2016.

Admittedly, I am an Oculus fan, but I will almost certainly buy the HTC Vive when it is released.
I can't imagine that Frontier won't support the Vive, especially considering their relationship with Valve now.

Hi Lee, me too. I'm really enjoying it still. I'm currently making my way back to civ space after a 50k trip. I really can't wait to get back and try out different ships and do some combat, trading and even mining in the rift, all which will be new experiences for me as I haven't been back yet to civilian space since I got my rift in early May. I'm still about 45k out so it's not going to be for some time though..

Lee, thank you for brightening my morning after i just gone done reading the vitriol on the other posts. It's like a bath of fresh air! +1 rep

I decided to fly around in a eagle last night, which had been a while since last I did, and I forgot how comfortable it is. I repeatedly had the sensation/want to touch all the controls, side panels, and stare out the windows (I forgot how open and visible that cockpit is). And like every ship I've gotten into, I decided to get up and walk around. Except for the headless body that fidgets occasionally in its last death throes, it sometimes feels like I'm actually there and I can't keep from smiling. Space is my coldest warm blanket.

Provided you have a beast of a graphics card then yeah its justifed. Fury/Titan X /gtx980ti basically. If you have something lower then you will spend a lot of time trying to tweak the graphics. With every patch you will be redoing the graphics or something has changed to give you lower performance. If you are happy with tinkering a lot with the game then sure go for it.

The difference between flat screen and dk2 is almost as significant as black and white to colour images...

I've been a self confessed Addict since January 2014 when my first DK1 and Elite Alpha arrived within days of each other. Every moment since has been a desire for smoother frame rates and better resolution. I remember ripping apart the DK1 and switching the screen for an HD "RIFT UP" one... I remember thinking it couldn't possibly get any better! The the DK2 came out with positional tracking and lastly frontier gave us their magnificent ingame SS... Which raised the bar yet again. I've build two monster rigs and spent over ten k on smoothing out the experience as best I can. I've tweaked and tweaked and cried and cussed but loved every minute of the journey!

18 months later and I've gone a week without playing for the first time due to a busted cooling pump. I literally dread to think the hours I have spent "blazing my own trail".
