Newcomer / Intro Still learning - a couple of simple questions

Hello fellow Commanders.

Okay, first question is really daft, but I can't seem to find a straight answer.

With the increased ranges of the more expensive FSDs, going from 12ly to 20ly etc..if on a 12ly drive a trip took 12 jumps say, would changing to a 20ly drive then reduce the potential number of jumps on that same trip?

In other words, does it mean you could skip over some of the jump points with the bigger drive if 2/3 systems were within the 20ly range? One of trading routes has 26 jumps in it and I'm looking to speed it up and look towards greater exploration.

For my second question, I seem to have upset both the Federation and the Alliance. Apparently they didn't take kindly to me trading slaves in their territory as I started to build up some cash. They also didn't take kindly to me defending myself when they attacked me.

Now I seem to be attacked on sight. I've paid all bounties and I only have a couple of minor dormant bounties from minor systems. However my reputation with the aforementioned groups is hostile. I've tried going to both groups stations to find missions to increase my rep and to get system permits, however I can't seem to find anything.

Can anyone help me on this please with ways to get them on side again?

Cheers Commanders.

First question really doesn't need answering as you already figured it out. Longer range means different route and less jumps on the way. :)

The second, well. Gaining back reputation is a real chore. The best thing in my experience would be to find some remote system with leading faction allied with one of the main (whichever you want to do first) and do a lot of bounty hunting (that seems to be the quickest way), once you get friendly with this faction, you also slightly raise the rep with Feds/Imperials. Then move somewhere else and repeat with another minor faction. Once you moved from hostile to unfriendly, you can start doing the same thing for the main faction itself in their own systems.
Or, you know, you could just move your base to the Alliance. :)
Good luck.

I think he upset the alliance as well. Empire for him :)

As above. You might also be able to improve your standing by selling exploration data but I'm nit sure how much impact that has. Best bet is sell them the scslps of other pirates /smugglers they don't like.

Thanks for the clarification on the first point commanders. Feel happier to drop the large amount credits on my Cobra now for the FSD.

As to the second point, allied remote systems and do bounty and dog body missions.

See you out there.

Don't forget to change the setting in the Galaxy map from "economical" to "fastest", to take advantage of a better, single jump range.

i.e. If you leave the setting at economical it will route you through several systems to reach somewhere; set it to fastest and it will let you set a course to a system directly (range permitting) or at least route you through fewer systems to get somewhere.

Oh, right. I can't read, apparently. :D

As for the rep impact of different things, it might be just a hunch, but I believe it is very closely tied to profit. Aka the rep gain will be the same whether you cash in 5M in bounties, selling data or as a profit from trading.

Oh another question I meant to ask to start with. When I go to some systems, it gives me the option of selling more than one set of exploration data. However, it'll only let me sell one set. Once one has been sold, the rest either disappear from the list or turn red saying I can't sell them. Is there any way around this?

In that case head 500ly out of populated space. Scan some stuff then go back and sell it at a federal outpost. That should be you enough to pick up missions for them to get you friendly.

You can only sell data from over 20ly away. The red ones will be closer than that. I suspect the ones that are disappearing are being sold as a batch - it does a page at a time.

For rebuilding reputation, find an independent system. You won't be hostile to the dominant faction there, as they don't pass Rep up or down to the major players. The system must also have representatives of the major faction you want to grind rep with. It's preferable if they don't have a starport, as they will have ships patrolling the port entrance that will shoot at you (you're a criminal after all) Small outposts are fine though.

Once you've found a system like this, do any and all missions for the Fed/Alliance minor faction. As your rep improves, it will filter up to the major faction.

You can, of course, do this in a system where the faction you're trying to rebuild rep with has a starport. However, they will have a concomitantly higher number of ships going through their doors, which means more bounty hunters and more people to have to worry about.
