I have a thing for mugs. It's a weakness that's not quite a hobby. And I've always wanted to buy an Empire mug to swig tea and coffee along with my gaming sessions. I've been waiting roughly three years for the Empire mug to come into stock in the Frontier store, but.... sod all. The Federation and Alliance mugs have been sat there waiting for buyers this entire time, but the Empire mug might just as well be an extinct dinosaur for all it's worth. Why has the store been "out of stock" of this item virtually since the game launched, but has consistently had the other two for sale, especially as the Empire seems to be the most popular faction among players. Will it ever come back in?

I suspect that's part of your answer right there. They probably ordered equal numbers of the three mugs, and the Empire mugs sold out first because they were most popular. We know they used to exist; there's that famous and much-memeified picture of Sir DB himself drinking out of an Empire mug.
Maybe they're waiting for all three mugs to sell out before they order more?

I can confirm that it is a thing. My wife buys about one mug every week. I could build a small house out of those that fell out of favour.
For Imperial, it should be a wine or brandy glass, surely ?

Trying to work it now, but can't get an all-black mug, let alone one with the same design as the store mug. Of course, I am the same bloke who took two years to work out how to fly out of a space station, so this is perhaps no surprise.
Any advice on how to get is as close to the store version as possible?
There is a little truth in there.
I can not tell you more than there is in the store designer.
There are black cups in the designer and you can also choose the color you want according to the models of cups.
For logos and texts it's the same principle.
If I have a tip, you have to be curious and do a lot of testing in the designer.
You can also ask someone around you to do it for you.
