Elite / Frontier Still number one after all these years...

Hi All,

I recently got back into FFE as I've hit a dead end in the space-sim gaming market. I've tried countless alternative elite wannabes, but nothing even comes close to the original series.

I remember picking up the retail box of FE2 for Amiga back in 1993 and was totally blown away by its immersion factor. Mr. Braben & team has created a timeless classic that will never lose its appeal. I'm hopelessly addicted to this awesome game once again. :D

If and when the next installment is released, Frontier Developments has a guaranteed customer here (amongst many other fans I know). I'm sure from the fan-base alone it will sell millions.

Hi and welcome!

Yeah they did create a classic that even now games producers are struggling to find that sweet spot that Frontier found.

That sounds familiar; Freelancer and X-BTF are among the ones I've tried, but to no avail...

I've tried X-BTF, X2, X3, Privateer, I-WAR 1&2, Freelancer, Battlecruiser/UC, Darkstar One, just to name a few. Thus far nothing has the original realism or that 'sweet spot' that I'd grown so fond of in the elite series.

The wait continues, but I've still got the classics to keep me occupied in the meantime.

Steve, found your site to be a very valuable resource. Haven't seen a more complete collection of infos anywhere else on the web. Keep up the good work _b

Darkstar One was a steaming heap of doo doo. I've been getting some enjoyment out of EVE Online but you have to pay an ongoing for that and it's very time consuming.

@Steve - just checked out the collection of Elite games you have - that's massive :D well impressed!

I need to try I-war, I've heard it's very good. So far nothing came close to Frontier, though, and I can't even chalk it up to nostalgia, as the first time I played it was well after shaders became commonplace in games.

I-War is a very cool game, the newtonian physics make it fun but the universe feels somewhat restricted and linear. Still worth picking up if you're into this kind of game though.
