Newcomer / Intro Still playing open, still loving it

I don't get to play much, 2 kids, wife, full time job etc.

But when I do i escape into the galaxy. Brilliant.

I am by no means a good pilot, I still muck up station approaches and as i'm still in a Sidewinder i can awkwardly bumble in through the slot at bizzare vectors.

I was just messing around last night, have run a bunch of courier type missions. Decided to do some small scale trading. Great, enjoyed that, especially the 3 NPC interdiction attempts which I managed to evade.

The sidewinder, it's a starter ship sure, but I like it, a bit like my car it is basic, underpowered and nothing special. But i find myself really enjoying it!

I now find myself in the position of having a few credits, not wanting to trade grind and enjoying the idea of submitting to an interdiction and giving some one a little scrap (NPC ideally! i'd be out done by a CMDR no doubt!)
Has anyone actually pimped their sidewinder, what is the biggest takedown you have managed in it? (and survived)

There are quite a few people who pimp out their Sidewinder or get an Eagle and do perfectly fine. The combat is such that you can beat any ship in an Eagle if you are skilled enough, no matter how much firepower you are facing. I personally haven't managed anything like that but I've seen footage of a Sidewinder easily taking down a Cobra.

Thanks guys.

I had another jaunt into the abyss last night, did a bit of running around and came across an issue with the nav maps, galaxy and system, since the 1.06 update either the bindings have changed (I have a backup) or something else has gone wrong.

Has anyone found a problem in the maps at all, I normally use a mouse, but I might re-bind to the 360 controller for ease (when playing on the TV while sat on the sofa)

Issue is left click works maybe once to select a destination, then the zoom/pan is intermittent, made getting around interesting. Ended up routing manually - select nearest system from left UI lock and jump, then repeat, then cruise around to get close enough to the station's nearest body!

'elp!

plus ended up with my first bounty on my head, missed a wanted target and clipped an NPC, systemn security almost obliterated me! Lesson learnt.

I had alot of fun with the sidewinder. I thought the first ship you get is going to awful but nope, i had some great dogfights against more expensive ships and won almost all fights. But yesterday i went for the Eagle for more agility and speed. Will miss you sidewinder :)

I'm a meagre a Novice rank and have pimped my sidewinder to pretty much all A class hardware (gimbal beam lasers and multi cannons) and regularly take down bounties on Type 6 , Federal Drop Ships and even the odd NPC Elite status pilot in a python. Ok, so I'd probably get my rs handed to me on a plate by a real CMDR but it helps develop skills, boosts the ego, and the bank account.

Yeah, I had no problem killing a Python with my Eagle. Just took a little bit.

To the OP, I'm in the same position and have a dog as well, so similar issues with grabbing a couple of hours here and there.

Been around since June last year and I'm still enjoying it but progress is a gradual thing, which isn't a bad thing either.

Currently trading in a Type 6, just away from the main populated areas, so I don't get hassled too much in Open.

Once I get my Asp and soup it up, "I'll be back!"

Thanks all, yeah I think the sidey is here to stay for a while. Tried some mining last night, might do that again tonight (her good self is on nights!) started upgrading a few bits on the sidey too. Also manged two instances of unscanned docking at a coriolis too! I may yet become a smuggler!

well her good self is back on nights and the kids are no longer suffering with any illness, so that means I have some time to play. Got about 2 hours in last night. Decided to break out of my mining or mission running and courier mode and go all out offensive.

Yup I might be the littlest bounty hunter, but good god it is fun!

Stuck with Solo while cutting my combat teeth. I did do the training missions before starting play anyway.

What happened, went to a USS and saw a pirate eagle attacking a hauler, so valiantly stepped in, stuffed the eagle, got him to 10%, clipped the damn hauler (missed the eagle and clipped it) then got a load of security on my backside, nailed the eagle and shifted out with 10% hull left myself.
Got all fixed up, went Nav point hunting, again eagles, but this time they were hunting a wanted Adder. Let them do a load of work getting him down to 60% then stepped in and let loose. Bam, mine. (ok,ok kill stealing but it's NPC)
Dropped into some more USS, nailed another eagle and later found a pirate nest, 3 cobras, viper and an eagle. I bugged out of that one, predictably. I then found some dropped cargo to smuggle, bertrandite, and another pirate eagle to nail.

2 hrs has netted me about 27,000, not the biggest haul, but i'm a happy bounty huntin' smuggler!

Been playing Open since very early Beta, and love it. I do pop into closed group to play with some friends when they are online, but other than that I am always in Open, love the thrill of maybe being interdicted by a player and/or meeting other players as we traverse the galaxy. (I see quite a few Cmdrs as well, which is great)

Good on you OP :)

Will be going back out tonight, this time in Open, as you say it's the unknown thrill of it!

Thanks :)

Really enjoying smuggling too, love the fingers crossed for no scan as I fly at full throttle at the slot!

Sidewinders are nice ships. Sure they are basic, but they are cheap to fix (you never hear anyone crying about a 50,000 repair bill), they got a little cargo, some guns, can jump a bit. I would stick with a Sidewinder as an exploration ship if it only had one more internal compartment.

Well the weekend yeilded some unexpected successes.

Scraping around USS, did some smuggling of salvaged cargo left drifting, getting good at that for the most part.
Got lucky with a Novice wanted MkIII Cobra NPC, picked up the hefty (for me) bounty of 15K, found some dropped cargo, went to drop it off. Did the thing i've been reading about and chuckling about, flew fast into the station, squeezed by a type something in the slot, hit boost accidentally and slammed into the landing pad I was facing and exploded! Doh! Kind of funny though.

Same score on the next trip out after buying my ship back, dropped into a USS with a wanted python being battered by an NPC annaconda, sat back, watched shields go down, deployed HP targetted, fired and assited the kill, 19K to me, lovely.

A few wanted haulers, eagles and cobras later and my confidence is up a bit now :)

I've now upgraded most of the sidey a little, so the insurance is creeping up, not scary or even remotely unaffordable, so I'll stick with it for a good while yet. I do have my eye on a Cobra though....

If you just dump the shields and weapons it will be a nice enough exploration ship.

Of course, if you are just doing short range exploration of uncharted systems inside the inhabited bubble, you don't need the fuel scoop, as exploration data will pay for your fuel. You can equip a 2D shield then, which will bring your overall cost down under 2 millions and your insurance just below 100k.
