Still trying to figure out Gal map long routes

So, with 1.1, we can plot out to 1000LY. There is a star 800 LY away that I'd like to get to. I have 'fastest route' selected.

When I type in the star name, then hit the arrow, it goes to that star and I can click on the star and hit 'select'. There are no blue lines nearby. I waited 5 min thinking it would take some time for it to 'connect the dots', but no blue lines showed up. I clicked on 'plot route' anyway. It got to 64% and popped 'route unavailable'.

Next I tried waiting a little longer after selecting the star, and it got to about 76% before popping 'route unavailable'.

So I hit the arrow to take me back to where I am on the map and zoomed out to where the blue lines stopped. What I saw was solid blue lines out to ~ 96 LY, then one dashed blue line, then no more blue lines. This was true even though it appeared nearby starts could be connected. I know it's hard to be sure, but it looks that way.

Are we still limited to 100LY or am I doing something wrong?

the blue lines still only stretch out to roughly 100LY (more in less dense areas).
the 1000LY plots are simply to be able to pick a particular star further away that it will plot a route to, it will not stretch the blue lines out to 1000LY, you would be sitting there for hours.
if it comes up saying that the route is unavailable, then at some point during the route, its calculating that your going to need to do a jump that is larger than what your ship can do.

I'm no expert but the dashed lines are showing where you run out of fuel. It is almost entirely possible that there is no route to the location you selected if your ship can't jump far enough. I'm sure if I'm wrong someone will correct me :)

Cool man, thanks. I guess the second time it got to 76% instead of 64% before saying 'route unavailable', I thought maybe I wasn't waiting long enough or something.

Edit: "Problem" solved. Upgraded FSD from E4 to C4. Now I CAN get there from here. :)

Soo...the "occupied" part of the game only goes out so far from the starting sector? I'm doing some exploring, and when I look at the Galaxy map, all the green/red/blue stars showing the 'allegiance' stop showing up.

So that means if you go past this boundary, there's now starport to land? You have to back track?

Yes. Behold the unknown!

Back track? No, you venture forth! That's the point of exploring, going beyond the normal sphere of operations. You might need a fuel scoop, though.

Yeah, I was on my way to Orion's belt. Once I saw the game ended a few stars back, I turned around. No point in going there. I did manage to sell $170K of exploration data though.

I saw why people say it's so unlikely to get 'discovered by' now. I went that far, and every body in every system was already 'discovered by'. No point in trying to get that anymore.

I guess I'll peruse the Empire now, and finally turn in the $100k in bounties I have.

I'm still finding undiscovered discoveries. It seems there is a layer you have to sift through from the point of where civilization ends before you start finding them but they are out there, I promise... :)

...I mean if you think about how many systems(Each star you can click on in galaxy map) there are, it'll take a while to have them all discovered...

I think we have discovered a tiny fraction of what is available

The recent newsletter story put it at a tiny fraction of one percent of the systems.

I'm currently on my way back from a trip, still around 700 Ly from Sol, and still finding new systems that no-one else has discovered all the time.

With there being 400 billion stars in the Milky Way galaxy, and let's say that there are a million people playing ED (which there aren't), each of us would have to discover 4000 stars before all of them were "discovered." Add to that the numerous smaller objects you find in most solar systems and you end up with tens of thousands of objects that each player would have to discover before running out of things to find. Face it, if this simulated version of the Milky Way is as big as they claim, this game will be long dead before we ever "discover" it all.

Abil, why did you feel you had to turn back? Why did you think you couldn't proceed beyond the populated systems?
