Stolen goods navy rank missions

Hi everybody,

It's been few days i'm googling with no answers to my query.. I got few Fed navy rank up missions telling me that I need to get "x" stolen goods and also, very important, those missions explain something like "Sometimes war is useless, so we ask you to get those stolen goods, no need to fire them up" (sorry for my English ..)
So according to the map, I can see where should I find those canisters, however, I can spend hours going to WSS without finding the goods.

Am i doing something wrong ? Are you guys having the same issue ? the only "replies" I found on internet were pretty much "Avoid those missions" which is kinda sad though

Cheers !

Sadly it is currently best to avoid them, however are you sure it's telling you to find them at WSS's or is it telling you you need to pirate them, if its pirating them you need to go searching for trading vessels. Either way running "illegal" missions for rank isn't the best idea, too much can go wrong if you screw up and end up having to claw back your rep points. The rank missions do refresh to other kinds so you can stay clear of them if you want to stay legal.

Thanks for the reply,

According to the mission's summary, it clearly says that we can avoid the war by just stealing those goods, so therefore, I'm guessing that the best way to get them is to stop by the WSS instead of putting down a vessel.

When I'm having mission summary explaining for instance that a vessel blowed up somewhere and I have to get the goods from it, I don't have any issue, I'm just stopping at WSS till I find it. I'm having problems only with those "no need to go on war, please bring x stolen goods" missions.

Just got same mission 15 mins ago.
Jumped to target system, found 1 WSS, got 1 of 2 needed stolen goods.
Flied to next WSS, found another canister with needed stolen goods.
Took about 10 mins to complete, unfortunately, no rank progression :)

All right,

Sounds good then, It's just that it's been the third time I'm having those missions as rank up ones, and I spent hours and hours with nothing at all. Guess just no luck!

Cheers guys !

Yes, for many of these missions you're guessing. They are so poorly written that you often have no idea what they are asking you to do or how you should go about completing them. I've just stopped doing any of these until I get one that is unambiguous.

1. get a friend and have them purchase the product but don't wing up.
2. Have them meet you at a location and jettison the cargo.
3. ???

I read that already from the another thread. Obviously it would work, however, I feel like kinda stupid having to end up doing those "tricks" just to get a mission succeeded, you know what I mean ?

I just had to abandon one of these missions after foolishly taking it on. Was offered a "knight promotion" (I was either an outsider or a serf at the time; I forget) if I returned with 9 (!) stolen canisters of synthetic meat. I tried everything - visiting black markets (it looks like you can only sell goods there) and going to signal sources of all types (I nearly got killed at one of the strong ones). I even tried looking in a high tech system, since (I believe) they produce synthetic meat. I didn't see one single canister of the stuff.

What was I supposed to do? Was there realistically any way to complete this mission? I managed what I thought was a similar mission to collect black boxes just fine.

No, seriously, how do I complete that sort of mission? I was just offered another one (albeit for 4 canisters) which I had to decline. Where exactly do I have to go to find them? Am I missing some piece of equipment?

You have to pirate goods off another ship. Salvage items might be found in a WSS, but regular cargo has to be obtained out of a traders hull. A cargo scanner will let you know what they are hauling, shooting out the cargo hatch or using a limpet will spill the cargo.

Thanks guys. It does seem insane that they're encouraging criminality!

I'll take another type of mission if I get the option, but if not, a pilot's gotta do what a pilot's gotta do. For the Empire!

Well, I think technically we have to visit WSS because the mechanic should be like assassination missions, you can complete it doing the FSD interdiction or just by visiting USS. It would make any sense if we would have to buy specific modules to complete those kind of missions. That's my opinion, maybe i'm wrong

I foolishly took on one of these missions yesterday in my Asp and needed 21 canisters of some stolen goods. The system I had to go to had two suns and no other bodies. It was full of SSS and each one had a T9 containing one canister of those goods, and was escorted by two Anacondas. Sometimes there was a second wing of vultures escorting another T9. Discretion being the better part of valor, I decided not to attack these wings (21 times) to get one canister each time. All the ships were listed as lawless, so I don't think I would've gotten a bounty for attacking. So yeah, I think I'll stay away from these missions for awhile.

I stayed away from all missions requiring me to drop into random USS to find goods right from 1.0. Still a good policy to go by in 1.3.05.

Finally got my first Emp mission to come up and it was one of these. Read this thread and was a bit apprehensive. Just 1 cannister of Exp Chemicals. (Stolen)
Flew to system and sat at jump in and waited for Weak Signal Source to come up and dropped as soon as it says disengage. (If you fly closer you drop out to nothing) Drop as soon as you see the disengage.
First one was data so went back to supercruise. Next one was what I needed and luckily I only needed one of them.
Scooped it up, flew back and got the promotion.

Thanks for this thread explaining how to do these. As of August 2015, seem to be working fine.

just spent a couple of hours trying for a promo to Knight, in return for a measly 3 stolen tons of Grain. Couldn't find them anywhere. Not in WSS, interdicting traders, interdicting pirates, USS, the works. Shot me up a couple of Type 9s, just to see - still nothing, even targeting Cargo Hatch (didn't have Cargo Scanner). Gave up. Drank. Played more... Gave up properly.

I've done quite a few piracy missions, I pick them up with kill x pirates/traders/bh and such. You will probably not find what you need in WSS, and ignore the quest icon on the map. You must fly to a system of the proper economy type which produces the good you want to steal, so agricultural for grain, high tech for synthetic meat, industrial for power generators, etc. If you really don't want a bounty you can still do it, pirates and smugglers carry cargo and you can pirate the pirates but it takes longer than being indiscriminate. Make sure you turn off your crime reporting too, don't need the po po showing up. Just interdict ships that look like they carry cargo, anything wanted, and check out USS. Bring cargo scanner and hatch breakers of course. Ignore bounty hunter type ships like vipers, vultures, eagles, etc as they rarely carry any cargo. There are more ships flying around in higher population systems too.

edit: Salvage items are what will be found in WSS. These are black boxes, ancient artifacts, etc. A list of salvage type items is on the wiki I believe.
