Newcomer / Intro Stolen Goods

Hi All,

Recent newcomer to Elite Dangerous and loving the game and reliving memories of playing the original.

Regarding 'Stolen Goods', I recently went exploring in a Cobra, warped into an anarchy system and engaged numerous wanted NPC ships. During these engagements they would drop cargo, possibly in an attempt to stop me from attacking. After finishing off said 'crims I scooped the cargo cans.

Went to trade at the nearest station (where these items are normally traded) but they would not sell, they were all marked as 'Stolen'.

Why is this ?

TIA.

Cargo often dropped is marked as stolen unless a players abandons them - so there are two options to dump cargo. NPC's usually do not abandon them.

You should be able to sell them on the black market rather than as commodities - if the station has one you will find it under the contacts option in the station.

If you ship is scanned as you approach the centre you may get fined for carrying stolen items.

Anything scooped up "out in the field" is marked as stolen and can only be traded in at a black market (unless collecting it it is a mission goal).

Don't ask the logic of this (is there one?). Technically I suppose it really should be classed as 'salvage'.

You can only sell stolen goods on the black market, not all stations have a black market so you have to find one first. If you are taking it to a station that has a black market take great care not to get scanned by the system authority ships as they will slap a fine on you. Your best bet is to find a platform with a black market and sell it there far less chance you will be scanned at a platform. You will find the black market in the contacts menu.

I'm guessing your use of the phrase 'out in the field' is only for NPC cargo and cargo found floating about. Players can abandon cargo and that is not marked stolen.

Yeah. I wasn't counting player abandoned cargo, just the stuff found in USSs and dropped by fleeing npcs.

Thanks guys, I would've thought salvage as well but never mind.

There is commodity class for salvage, I found it at one outpost. Includes things like black boxes and artwork (Note you can not sell scooped cargo there). But a normal commodity in space seems to be always stolen.
I am assume salvage commodity class for something not in game yet.

Regarding being scanned while carrying stolen cargo...
I was able to eject a few canisters of stolen Gold (maybe 4? Units) and didn't get hit with a fine. It was all I had at the time, and I dumped it all ASAP; so while I don't know if that's repeatable or not, it could be wothwhile if you get pinged?
**edit - btw, I just scooped it up again and carried about my business.

Logically speaking, if you didn't buy it then it is not legally yours, therefore it is stolen.

I like to think that the canisters which contain the goods are registered to the ship who bought the goods. If you find canisters floating in space which are registered to another ship then they will be marked as 'stolen' if you have them on your ship.

I don't see anything illogical about that.

Does nobody read a simple FAQ before starting the game? Because "anything in space is stolen cargo" is in every newbfaq right alongside "don't fly without enough to re-buy" yet threads pop up daily about both issues.

Cargo in space is used for the smuggling missions as well. They can be quite profitable and return a lot of Rep if your careful how you do them.

One needs to eat space humble pie

Jettison Cargo (Abandon) is available only when you are the owner of the cargo. This means either you either purchased the cargo yourself or you scooped the cargo after the previous owner jettisoned it using the "Abandon" command. This is the option to use if you want to transfer credits to another CMDR. By abandoning your cargo and letting them scoop it, they will be able to sell it on the Commodities Market .

Found here CMDR
