Newcomer / Intro Storing vs Selling

Sorry if this has been covered in other threads, but why do all the ship upgrade threads mention selling all of the sellable components before trading up to the bigger / faster / shinier ship?

Surely if I have A-Rated my current ship and have finally accumulated sufficient credit for an upgrade, that half a dozen components moved across would be a cheaper upgrade path than sell and re-buy.

...or am I missing something obvious?

Are there any pros or cons that I am not aware of?

Not all equipment is the right size for the new ship, it might be too small or too large.
Some you can transfer but others could cause problems - too small a Frame Shift Drive and you can be stuck in the system :(

But why sell it? Keep your current ship and when you buy a new one, work towards A-rating the modules, and if you find out you don't like the bigger/better ship then you can easily go back to the previous ship with all the modules still intact.

Because you sell a ship for 90% of the total cost (including modules) whereas you get 100% for selling a module. Therefore it makes sense to sell the more expensive modules before selling the remainder of the ship.

So the if I don't think I need credit to buy a ship, selling the component parts before trading in the ship would net me more money but if I either plan to go back to the ship at some point in the future or potentially re-use components then there is no downside to holding onto 'old' stock.

You need not worry any more - you can now store modules (up to 60).

The point of removing / selling (or downgrading) them before selling your ship is that selling a ship only gets 90% of the value which of course includes all fitted modules. Therefore we sell (or store) everything we can (hardpoints, utilities and optionals) - for the core items we fit the cheapest we can put in the slot. selling or storing the more expensive ones.

This is more important once modules are engineered of course and there is also the fact that you might have expensive stuff which you bought with a LYR discount and you want it for the future.

If you intend to keep your current ship (I still have all mine I think) then the only reason you would swap-out modules would be for their fitted modifications or to keep costs in refitting down. For example my first ships swapped ADS since that is rather expensive when you first start up.

Enjoy yourself.

That is about right. In a previous life I only ever had one ship and always sold of the bits and part-exchanged, even then the effort involved was seldom worth the cash saved. Nowadays I run several ships and depending what I want to do at the time I swop between them, so I like to store each as is when I buy a new one (not that I do that very often).

There are pluses and minuses to each approach and it probably depends on personal style. Plus of course engineered items amy thought the cost/benefit equation in one direction or another, but I have not got to engineers yet so I would hate to offer an opinion on that aspect.

I agree with Malc. I'm new myself and had the same question, but I looked at it this way: if I questioned it would leave me with no money and stranded, I wouldn't sell it - again that's just me and my paranoid fundamentals, lol.
