Story events too far away for me to be any use (gameplay wise)

Please take this as *helpful* criticism, which I hope Frontier will find useful in improving the game. (Anyone who thinks this is "whining" needs to take a good hard look at themselves.)

I was hopeful that "the story" starting on 16th December would liven-up Elite Dangerous, as I've been playing since Beta & it's got a bit samey... But current events are almost impossibly far from me, and I guess many other people:

Sorbago = 165 Ly
Kappa Fornacis = 115 Ly

Problems with this:

The route planner doesn't go anything like that far, so I'll have to manually fly there, and I could finding myself stuck in a "dead end" that requires me to back-track a long way. (e.g. There is a star just 9 Ly away (slightly beyond my jump range) that require 10 jumps in a circle to get to!) I don't understand why long distance planning should be so hard to program, as I've written an "A-star" search algorithm before & it doesn't need much memory or CPU time (and you can even reduce memory & CPU usage with a little trick, at the expense of slightly worse routes).

My little Eagle with a standard FSD is only capable of an 8 Ly jump at max, but it's unlikely stars will be exactly 8 Ly away. So I'm more likely to make 4-6 Ly jumps on average. That's 23 or 33 jumps, assuming I can fly in a straight line without any back-tracking (unlikely), with at least 3 stops for fuel (better say 6 to avoid the risk of running out of fuel miles from anywhere). More likely I'll have to fly in a wiggly line & back-track a bit, so I guess about double the number of 'perfect' jumps, meaning about 50 jumps with 12 refuelling stops.

50 jumps is a pretty insane number to require, especially as when I get there I might find the current events aren't suited to me for whatever reason. (And even if I'm OK with it, I can imagine many newbies finding the Combat Zones too hard.)

Sadly I can already imagine the unhelpful replies I'll get, with people defending the game (as if it were somehow perfect), rather than trying to suggest possible solutions. So I'll try to get things going in the right direction, by suggesting a possible improvement that I already made in a related thread:

It's already in there. When there's a local state change then it's reported in the system's newsfeed. The global stuff is for our manual storylines. We might well expand the automatic system but the core is in.
Please do. It would be great for Galnet to list the nearest 5 events (local state changes). That way everyone would know where interesting things were happening near them, and go there if they wish. If there wasn't anything interesting in (say) a 50 light year radius, then Galnet could list the nearest places which were nearly ready for a state change (e.g. Civil War might break out).

At the moment it's almost 'impossible' for me to go to the two manual game events, as they are hundreds of light years away & I've got a rubbish Eagle (the automatic route planner doesn't work that far, and I don't have huge amounts of gameplay time to waste). At least if there was a Civil War 20 light years away I would know about it, and could consider flying there to take advantage of it.

Maybe the point is you need to "level up" a bit, make some money, buy a better FSD/ship before you think about participating in the story?

Play 2 days (max!!!) Jump in an hauler, make some mission, buy an FSD and travell 100 LY in 15 min max... plz stop crying. ...

it took me hours to make it from where i spawned to imperial space just so i could start "playing the way i want". the terrible design choices made thus far is no surprise considering the choir of yes men we have on stand by here in the forums. hopefully it wont take more than a few more months to turn this into something worth playing, otherwise i may forget about this game. i sort of got my eye on Pulsar Lost Colony since i could actually play with my friends and be in a multi crew ship with them (something FD and CIG seem to have a LOT of trouble wrapping their minds around).

Search around for upgrades/lighter components. I had an Eagle that had a 15ly jump range. I'm now in an Adder with an 11ly Jump Range and good cargo space.

It can be done, but as suggested previously, perhaps somewhat unkindly, that you might need to get a few upgrades for your ship first or along the way.

Don't give up. See you out there!!!

As mentioned above - if you'd spent a little time in your local area and got some money together you could upgrade your ship / FSD and make jumps of around 20 LY in a go. This means you can cover 100 LY in 5 jumps, and each jump takes a minute. Couldn't be easier.

In the route planner - just make sure you have "fastest route" selected instead of "economical", to make full use of the drive's range.

Not very helpful. Sorry that I have a life & a job & other interests, so I don't play for hours every day. And sorry for being a bit burnt out by Beta testing heavily, so I'm not into grinding anymore (I prefer to do fun stuff in ED if possible).

Great, so the story automatically excludes newbies & people without tons of free time? Not very helpful.

Don't you think I already know that a bigger/better ship would solve the issue? That requires a fair amount of money = spending lots of in-game time (typically doing boring repetitive stuff, rather than doing fun stuff).

Tag a fuel scoop (even if temporarily), plan a jump to middle, get flying and refueling at the stars in between, and at destination plan the final half, jump away and refuel at stars. At final destination refit what you discarded to get a scoop. Won't take long - no need to wait days to get longer jumping bucket even.

In that, refueling is the most "tedious" bit.

It's a shame that people seem to have completely missed the point of my thread, which was suggesting ways in which FRONTIER could solve this issue.

So I'm probably one of the folks in the, "I have commitments", group. Job, family, etc. I get to play a couple hours here and there, sometimes I don't get to log on for a week. I found that doing missions to get kitted for mining, then going to a pristine belt and mining, I would log in and out as time allowed in the belt until i filled my cargo hold and then sell. It's taken me since gamma but I'm in a C kitted cobra now and putzing about doing whatever I like, a bit of everything.

I think a lot of people are looking to engage in the storyline, because so many games are scripted and you travel a linear story from soup to nuts. From 30 yrs ago I know the best story is the one in your head. My story inside the game is filled with events not in the empire/federation storyline, and for me that is awesome.

This.

Everyone going on about how you can jump further...hardly anyone spotting that there are VERY FEW STORY EVENTS for an entire galaxy.

I don't know why they don't have generated, smaller events, that show up in local Galnet feeds...

I believe it will go that far it just takes a while to calculate all the possible routes from where you. In the galaxy map you'll see blue-ish lines popping up between systems. This is the route planner calculating every possible route from your location. Turning on fastest route should do it quicker. But I do agree there distances are tad far if you're in a small ship with standard equipment and just want to jump in. Maybe Frontier could place starter systems a little close to the initial story events?

Just do it. 100 light years took me 20 minutes and a bit of fiddling with the map to head in the right direction.

I suspect that there's going to be more action on the border with Imperial space anyway, so I moved.

So I saw that the Sorbago stuff was around 179 Ly from where I was when it all kicked off........ I just went for it, in my little eagle....

For me, the journey to the system was a massive part of the draw for me. Felt like I was embarking on an epic voyage to "Do my bit". I loved it.

Everyone seems to find fault in everything with this game :(

Nothing to solve here apart from you upgrading your ship, that is how this game works after all...
