Newcomer / Intro Story from a noob

So I finally decided to fork out the money and get the game. Loving the immersion so far!

I spent a couple hours watching/doing tutorials to make sure I got the controls down. There are a couple buttons to my joystick left I still wasn't sure what to assign to, but whatevers. I can figure out what I need as I go.

I started the game. I wasn't really sure how to target people yet. Or do much of anything. I spawned in next to a ship that had a "wanted" tag on him. It said he was a novice. Naturally, I took this as a sign that I was meant to stalk him and blow him up.

10 minutes of stalking later, I realized I didn't know how to knock him out of FSD. He seemed to be going toward a wing of pirates, so I decided to give up on stalking and do other things. That's when I noticed the pirates had blown up a ship full-o-gold and left! Score!

I immediately dropped from FSD and went to pick up all the crates I could carry. I picked up the first and got blown up instantly. Awesome! I don't even know if it was some kinda security force that blew me up or if the pirates circled back.

Starting over, I decided to get a mission from the bulletin board. "Give 3 Fruit and Vegetables to blahblahblah station." Easy, right? It took me 2 hours to finally find a place that sold fruit and vegetables. I bought 4 of them just to be safe. It took all the credits I had. I go back to deliver them, then realize it was intended as a donation and they weren't actually paying me to do it.

*sigh*

Now I'm totally broke and still have no idea how to make credits. I think I'll just ram my face into cargo ships until I respawn again with some credits.

There are delivery and courier jobs where they give you the goods to take.
OTOH, no shame at all in restarting or headbutting the station wall

Sounds like you started off better than me.

To get enemies out of super cruise, you need to buy an interdiction mod for your ship. Another way to do combat is to find and enter an Unknown Signal Source. There are 3 kinds. Week which are usually just lost crates/canisters, Strong which is for multiplayer/wing combat and Unknown Signal Source which is set for a single player encounter that can be combat or other random encounters.

You can hunt in Nav points and mineral extraction sites as well.

At the early stage, it's probably best to stick with the bulletin board. Do simple deliveries or combat missions. Generally, the higher the reward, the higher the risk.

Fly safe.

I remember my first spawn and looking at the docking bay and thinking; now what do I do? I didn't even know how to get to the surface! As it turns out I was an early backer and there were no vids to help. If you could crash in the bay's I would have done it.

Anyway, many sidewinders later, I got the hang of it and so will you. Great memories, all worth it.

See you out there.

Heh, thanks for the tips guys. I locked in on one of those unidentified signals and it turned out to be a guy attacking a cargo ship. I helped the cargo ship and it turned out the guy had a bounty on his head big enough to buy me an Eagle all in one go. Woo!

.... Why is the Eagle not named after a snake?

From another newbie

There are trading sites that will show you the most profitable trades from any starting location. Thrudds is the one I use: http://elitetradingtool.co.uk/. If you look at the tabs at top of the page one is Lists, that page will give you a list of all the sites near your location that can provide or buy an item.

When you get around to upgrading your ship then this site is the one to look at: http://www.edshipyard.com

There are quite a few third party resources if you look for them online.

I love that feeling
