Story so far ... and still not touched another game

Late arrival in Beta and basically had the month before release to get use to controls etc.

Started off trading in Sidey and managed to get enough to get the Cobra, was introduced to Rares and traded enough of these to pimp it mainly A modules. Decided to go and become an Elite warrior in combat, even with my pimped Cobra I sucked (learnt a valuable lesson regarding insurance !) Purchased a Viper in the slim hope it was the Cobra holding back my fighting prowess ....... I was dismayed to find I still sucked (luckily I had insurance this time)

Decided to kit out Cobra as exploring ship, Detailed long range scanner and best FSD I could buy. Explored for many days and to date the most satisfying game play I have had, yea, I know the rewards are not great but the visuals are stunning and I like the idea of space being so big I don't run into anyone.

Anyway, decided I would try trading more seriously to save for one of the monster ships so now, as of last night I have the Type 6 trading bus and am just looking for a good supply run.

I'm just really pleased that after 1 month I'm actually still managing to try different parts of the game and still enjoying it as much as when I first played in Beta.

Any tips on how to not suck in combat then let me know.

I still have GTA V in it's cellophane from Christmas :) Like you, I've just got to a Type 6 as I've been in no rush but it's good to be making some cash.

As for combat I think just get out there and practice, think in 3 dimensions (you aren't an aeroplane), see if you can hook up your thrusters manoeuvring and have a Flight Assist off/on toggle you can easily reach

haven't even checked Steam out since i started with this. I bet their shares have dropped. I used to spend a fortune on crap I never played anyway

Easy way not to suck in combat is to not try and be the best. Its not all about killing and getting behind the opponent and taking him down, as you can do just as much damage with dumbfire as you could with a laser and multi cannons. I use 6 multi cannons on my Asp, I take Anacondas down very quickly, I use Shield cells, chaff and kill warrant. Get a cheap Viper, A spec it and have some fun killing NPC's. Once you get better move up to harder foes, change weapons and so on until you have the right balance. You will get better.

I am Expert at the moment. I know I could be higher rank but I have been trading. I will be kicking but soon as I have my A spec asp sorted out. Its all about having fun.

Was playing WoT before coming here, one of the Youtubber that does WoT videos went to a Gameshow in London and i watched that clip on my way home from work. On low volume and occasionally glancing at the screen. one of those glances he looked over the shoulder of a guy playing and i caught the radar screen. it made me go "WAAAAIT a minute, that looked like an Elite radar" a quick rewind and upped volume and I learned about ED. next morning, after a little research, I was in the Beta (slightly mad i did not learn about it before) and i don't think i been back to WoT since, or any other game for that matter. never even looked at the Sales steam had over x-mas and my installed WoT copy is probably a few patches behind now.
I even been dodging / ignoring my Wife's request to build her some houses in her favorite game (Sims) and she keeps saying just make me some when your tired of your Space game... (i had not had the heart to tell her "yeah, good luck with THAT") no trace of an burnout so far.

Nice all around. I too suck in combat, but I am improving. I bit the bullet and started to take the 'kill X pirates' missions and there has been some improvement. I suspect, and hope, that it's all about doing it.
:
What type of control set up do you have? I am loathe to suggest people spend money, but a flight stick I bought Has helped immeasurably. I put a cannon on my Cobra. That thing is like a mini-game in itself. Do what feels fun, but combat is a big part of the game, it would be a shame to pass it up.

I use to play BF4 all the time. After watching Bluedrake42 on a live stream with this game i bought it and never went back to BF4. I love this game.

With your Left hand...

learn to use your throttle,

know when to go Flight Assist Off,

Thrusters are a must in manouvering, and

throwing her into reverse (thrust) to tighten your turn or keep your guns/lasers on the target.

Right hand is on the stick...

Always roll so that you can pitch up or down with the target, if you try to Yaw, your dead in space.

Don't have a HOTAS, consider it soon...
