Newcomer / Intro Stranded with a full tank

I went to a system in a Diamondback Scout, sold it, then bought a Cobra. The best FSD I can find in this system (whose name I've forgotten right now) has a jump range of 1.8 units of fuel. I can't reach any other stars. None appear in my navigation tab. I've tried plotting fastest and economic courses, and just selecting every star in the galaxy map nearby and jumping, but they're all too far away. The best ship for sale in this system is the Cobra.

Is there another way out? Is there stellar drift? If so, how long does it take? If I accelerate to relativistic speeds without an FSD, will it slow down my game or speed up everyone else's?

They'll help you.

When your jump RANGE won't get you to the next star, I can't see what the fuel rats can do for you... Maybe give you a tow?

OP, Suggest posting your build. Maybe we can see something you've missed re class/size of your FSD. Otherwise, strip the Cobra down to a flying gas-can and see if your jump range goes up. Apart from that, I think you might be stuck. Without a bigger FSD, I can't see how your gonna get out of this one...

well, may be it's an error, I don't think it's a fuel rat's thing... where are you? I'mean tlhe system you locked yourself in?
However it seems you made something strange outfitting... type and class FSD you are using?

I logged in to write down my build, but the station has way more gear now, even a few things priced over a million. Got a cheap FSD that goes 2.5 units. I swear it wasn't like there before. Oh well, thanks anyway, people. :)

Glad to hear it. Sorry for my crappy rushed reading skills before.

I'm told that systems have a finite supply of modules, like they do commodities so they can run out. not sure this is true or not but might explain the above.

you might find that the cobra isn't actually the 'best ship' in this case. try a hauler (if they have one), strip it down and chuck in the best FSD available.

you'll get out of there, don't worry.

I was hoping for a futuristic Robinson Crusoe scenario here, you could have kept a journal for us to find years from now long after your demise. Glad you got out though.

I think it was a hauler I tried. I bought the highest frameshift drive on offer, thinking it would extend my jump range. I didn't check at the time, but when I departed, I found that I didn't have enough jump range to get to any of the nearby systems, so I had to go back to the station and change it for the next one down, which doubled the jump range.

All new Cobras have a class 4, rating "E" drive E4 FSD capable of around 10ly. You must have bought a smaller class FSD (e.g. A2). To increase your jump range you would have needed to buy a D4, C4, B4 or A4 FSD. Try coriolis to see the effect of different loadouts on a ship.

Are you quite sure you didn't have the sorting backwards? I often use the Hauler as a taxi to move my ships and only the A-rated fsd gives me over 30ly jump range with D-rated modules on everything else and everything unneeded stripped out.

At best it gives around twice the jump range compared to the E-rated one, so I am pretty sure you first used the E-rated and then fitted the A-rated one.

I'm pretty sure, but I can't be certain now. I'm a long way from that ship, so I can't check. I might go back on Wednesday. If I do, I'll confirm.

OK. Curiosity got the better of me. so I went back to check. It's a hauler. The A3 FSD costs 495,213 and jumps 7ly, while as the C4 costs 174,428 and jumps 17ly. I had them ordered by cost descending, so the A3 was at the top of the list, which I thought would be the best.

Class 3? It can only fit class 2, no?

I'm 100% sure I've paid 160k each time for an A-rated FSD.
