Strange crash Training ok, game not.

Finally got a rift and been getting back in to Elite. Did some training missions to get used to it, all running fine. Did the missions up to the advanced combat mission.

No crashes in training at all, game worked flawlessly.

Started a game in Solo Mode and first time I tried, game crashed shortly after entering cockpit. Second time game crashed after about 4 minutes. THe image in headset freezes then returns to oculus home, Elite is still running in background window and if I move the headset around it the view follows in game so headset appears fine, game working but crashed out on oculus. If I put headset on though, I'm seeing oculus home.

My game is installed to E: to conserve space on C:. From what I read, and tried, you can't install game from frontier to work with rift, you have to install via oculus.

I have read installing to C: resolved some crashing issues and I hope I don't have to do that, as that raises another issue. I have oculus set up to install games to E: by default. All other games I have played with it work fine though. If I do need to install ED to C:, how to I mange this with Oculus home? as I don't believe you can have games installed to different drives through it.

My system specs are:
Processor: I5-3470
GPU - GTX970
8gig Ram.

Bummed.

Given game works fine in training, but crashes in solo game mode I am a bit lost.

Anybody encountered this?

If you were to try the keystroke "Ctrl + F" it will show you the frame rate. I think that, for VR, a GTX970 is a bit low spec (I had a pair, SLi linked, and I did not get great frame rates. I now have a GTX1080 and the frame rates are a lot higher). I have just done a Google search for system requirements for Elite: Dangerous VR and I got this;

which would suggest your RAM and GPU are not high enough.

I got the same. I've got an IntelI5, 16Gb RAM, AsusRog1070 (drivers=v.388). Game would freeze in the rift, but I could still hear it, so it was just the graphics frozen. Seemed to me that either it's the Graphics or Oculus driver. If i closed the game and went back in it was still frozen - however if i closed the game and then also use the restart oculus driver from oculus home it fixed it.

9th Jan geforce released new drivers (V.390) so i've updated, and so far no new crashes.

See if you get any luck.

I had a similar issue a few times and isolated it to the USB not being able to keep up with the data rate. This was also accompanied by crackling audio before a crash. In my case, it turns out I had faulty USB - replacing the motherboard solved my issues. I run i7, Z270 motherboard, 980Ti.

this is better to be asked on the VR subforum,

anyway, have you installed by chance Win 10 FCU? people are reporting some issue after the update.

I had some issue with the Rift my self upon upgrading, seems (i'm talking around middle december or so, cannot verify right now, i'm abroad for work and won't be back home till end of january) that 388.00 Nvidia driver is your best bet. (i'm running a fully watercooled config with i7-4790K at 4.9Ghz and Gtx 1080ti strix at 2.05Ghz, paired with 16Gb of ram)

Other than that, seems that you are running on the bare minimum config for the game in VR

Also a piece of adivice, try to get an external (and externally powered) usb 3.0 hub, to power your sensors and rift. I was having some ghosting issue on my hotas and some random signal lost from the sensors, got the external usb hub and all got fixed.

I'd look elsewhere as I run a GTX 970 and it's fine. On medium VR neither the GPU or CPU are pressed and the ram is only using about 6 gig of my 16 gig. The only thing that takes a hit is the GPU ram which is maxed out. On low VR the GPU ram is still maxed out but the GPU and the CPU are loafing, each are running at around 30% usage. SS and HMD is set at 1.

Rift and the sensors should be plugged directly into a USB port on the motherboard if possible (or PCIx card if using that for USB). Plugging them into a hub simply reduces data throughput (as more devices share one bus). Random disconnects are likely due to power issues (USB hub not being able to supply enough power), so that could explain why your powered hub has resolved your issue.

Funny, back when the Rift came out it had serious issues with AsMedia USB ports and it was recommended that you get a daughter board to run the Rift. Tobii Eyes had the same issue so I got one for that. It was a cheapie Rosewell that both Oculus and Tobii Eyes both said works... And it did. For both.

1st suspect: Processor.

2nd suspect: RAM.

Your game is becoming unstable in Solo because Solo has more NPC's and also still communicates with the servers. Either your processor or RAM are unstable under the heavier load that VR introduces, and playing the game proper pushes them too far while the training sessions, which are much lighter on the processor, do not.

I've seen the recommendation for a daughter board - but my understanding was that it was when the motherboard didn't have a suitable USB chipset. There were compatibility issues with some chipsets. The recommended board was a PCIx board (not a USB hub). Are you referring to that, or a USB hub (i.e. that would plug into a USB port of your machine)?

My 2 cents worth!

I have Elite installed from frontier, no messing about with Oculus Home. If I want to run in the Rift, I use Elite Profiler to set a 3D profile and start ED from the launcher. Oculus should pick it up automatically.

I am on Win7 though, that may make a difference!

Sorry, I missed the "hub"... Yes, a hub would be a bad idea.

I would start by running the Oculus Compatibility Test tool downloadable at this link and go from there. It will generate specific recommendations which may go beyond Frontier's own recommendations to run ED for the PC, but generally speaking the system needs to meet the combined requirements of both in order to offer a generally acceptable performance. Other issues could be your Internet connection and even your NAT configuration per Frontier's recommendations to run the game even in Solo mode. ED requires constant Internet connection to the Frontier servers.

You will also want to turn on Logging in Verbose mode to have that information for Support in case you need to open a ticket.

I am having strange game hangs and sometimes a complete system freeze too, but only while playing Elite. Other games work flawlessly. It was fine until last week and I have not changed my system in any way except for installing the Windows Updates for Meltdown and Spectre - maybe they interfere somehow with the game or the graphics driver. The hang can occur at any time, but navigating through the mission board menu seems to make it happen faster.

Just to update this one. It turns out I had my video quality settings set to high. Not set to VR high.

This appears to have been the cause. A shame the game can't detect when your using the headset and adjust the quality setting to a VR one by itself.

All sorted though and currently running passengers about for some coin.

Thanks for all the suggestions.
