Strange encounter last night...

It's not what you think....;)
I was heading to Styx I think, or near enough, in my stock Sidewinder and I saw a little hollow blip on my scanner,

'Oh!' I thought, 'another player! How curious!' I was of course in Super Cruise, and the blip slowly descended the scanner - sure enough the interdiction happened... I only half-heartedly tried to lose him because, well, I was curious...

Now if I remember correctly the name of this gentleman/woman was Cmdr Kraitlow (or something) does anyone know if these encounters are recorded so that one can go back and look up a name?

Anyway the blip turned triangular, once I had been rudely interrupted from my SC. I know from watching Isinona's YouTube vids that triangle means hard points deployed. So I targeted the sidewinder (or cobra, I'm not sure - it all happened so quickly) and deployed my two gimballed pulses.

Then proceeded to occur a sort of surreal ballet in which neither of us fired but we jousted, turned, jousted turned. At one point I gave full power to engines and watched as the wobble-dots of my lasers found their mark and waited patiently for me to fire. But I didn't fire. My scanner said this CMDR was clean. I held back. He turned into my turn and we passed each other at close proximity. Again, without firing a single shot, him or me.

Now, I know that in order to afford the interdiction package, you have to be an experienced player; you'd have needed to build up your CR, bought a great ship, kitted it out, so I couldn't help but think this was some sort of test from an experienced vet, seeing if a noob like me would fire on him just because I was pulled out of SC - all this and more was rushing through my mind in the few seconds as my finger hovered over the trigger.

I didn't fire, instead I continued to turn and aim and joust.

Although I was itching to shoot and test out my new lasers (6600CR each!) I decided to do an 'Isinona' and retract hard points. Then something curiouser happened: he lined up with me, as if to joust again, then hit the afterburner and came racing accross the void straight at me. Just as he was about to hit me, he lowered his shields! I used lateral thrust to avoid him, just, and pretended I hadn't noticed what he had just tried to do.

I then typed out a friendly message to him:
'Nice view, here'
To which he replied
':)'
Then he FSD the hell outta there. I had to log off a few minutes later mid flight as my wee bairn awoke, but the reason I wrote this post is 2-fold:

TL;DR

1)I must ask you venerable fellow Elite Dangerous vets:

Was I a victim of a failed 'Suicide Gank' attempt???

2) Bravo Frontier DEV for creating such a wonderful game where I can encounter another player and have to think twice about blindly firing on them because, well, consequences!!! I applaud you wholeheartedly.

Great post, enjoyed reading that. Don't know what his intentions were, you may never know.

This is exactly the kind of little magic gameplay moment that can only happen in online open, and can only happen in Elite.

This is the kind of thing that will go right over the heads of reviewers and a good number of players.

I've had a couple of moments like this, and I hope FD continue to nurture this gameplay.

Perhaps they were testing the FSD interdictor, unsure of how to use it?

I was quite surprised the first time I fired one up and it told me I needed to be behind the target - suddenly the mechanics made sense... :)

interesting indeed i hope they come into the thread to give the other side of this encounter :D

Absolutely! I really hope he sees this! I probably completely mis interpreted his intentions!

Thank you kindly. Yes I wouldn't normally have posted anything but I found myself thinking about it 24hrs later, i think if a game (or film) has me voluntarily remembering it in a fond manner it is worth mentioning and this game has just utterly captivated me!
