recently I was docked at an outpost station, and suddenly the little station noises turned into a BIG wail- long, echoing. Surging. like a whale song. bunch of "whhhhuuuuooop! and "eerrrrrooouummm!"
Shadowplay failed me that day, and I didn't grab a vid of it. But it went on long enough that I was able to get in my ship and hunt it down- it was coming from a definite direction as I angled this way and that. I found it!!
As for that "Bwoww-oww-oww" and it seeming to be related to "unauthorized" pirate outposts, I always assumed it was a modified Discovery Scanner on the station, pinging everything around it for.. or because; Reasons.

It was the Tanks. Large cylinders arrayed in a 6pack, with oil rig refinery pipes going this way and that- once I found it- I recognized the sound: "pressurized tanks filling and equalizing under industrial level forces". It was actually really close to being authentic (if you ever worked around refineries/oil rigs). Just how I could still hear it through the vacuum of space remained a mystery. sorry for the letdown.
