Horizons strike against sentries mission

So I took a couple missions to strike sentry skimmers at Feynman Terminal in the Lalande 5781 system.
I go there and the alarm rings but no sentries come out to fight me. Tried again in solo mode but still no sentries.
How am I supposed to complete this mission? Is it bugged?

I did... well, attempted similar missions.

It clearly says which base on the planet I need to visit, and yes, it's there, and I can find the skimmer.

Problem is, the base is off-limits and a wing of Elite Annie, a dangerous eagle and viper, are hovering on the top.

OK, I *may* be able to make it on my SRV if there's no patrol. But with them raining PA from above? No chance. I tried 5x and I only managed to kill 1 out of 3 required by the mission.

I tried knocking them out with my FDL first, but after taking out the viper/eagle and started on the annie, REINFORCEMENT came........ like    . lol

The mission is rated Dangerous, which is the same rank as I am. And I got an a-rated FDL.

Is it possible to complete this without wingmen?

Managed to complete the mission by searching the planet for POIs until I found some skimmers to shoot at.
Pretty sure this is not working as intended.

I think you are right, I reported an identical failed mission at a base without the skimmers as a bug in Beta and was told it's known about. I recommend you post a bug report

Sentry Skimmer missions only be completed by SRV?

The missions are working as intended, but the mission descriptions need additions.

Here are some pointers:
- Always scan the nav beacon to get a mission update. It will help to prevent a situation where kills won't count
- You can find the skimmers either at the main installation, or at POIs within 100km.
- The missions can be done by air or ground
- If you are trying to do the missions by air, you often have to give the target a very low pass (50-100m) to wake them up
- If you see no skimmers at a search site or installation, just move on to another target

Obviously, the security level of the base should determine whether or not you can comfortable hit it. No/Low security bases are relatively easy to hit. Medium and High much harder, and often include air support.

Your easiest and best bet for these missions are POIs, but hitting the bases can be a blast.

strike against sentries mission broken

Tonight I did a regular strike against sentries mission and normally it takes a little time but im able to complete it.

Tonight was very different.

First of all I could not seem to hit the sentries. Even at point blank range with the thing buzzing just a few feet away. I can see my projectiles pass right through the targets. Its like the Skimmers are holograms. I used more than 3 reloads on 1 skimmer. I have played Elite for nearly a year now and I am a bounty hunter by triad. I AM NOT THAT BAD A SHOT! The Skimmers just where not taking ANY damage. After 2 hours of almost constant shooting I got 8 of the 12. So I gave up and went back to my ship. I followed the little **** and targeted it. Came up as mission target and blew it up with my 4x Class 2 Beams in under 1second...but it didn't count it against my mission. Destroy 12 sentries! Didn't say with SRV only. But for me the mission is broken. The Sentries just where not getting hit. Point blank nothing!!! All this talk of being able to do it from air. I have had 0% of target killed by air count towards the mission. Rockets. Beams and Cannons. It doesn't matter how they are killed only SRV kills count.

This is nothing to do with skill. Nothing to do with not scanning first. The game mechanic is broken when your shots do no damage and 2000 rounds of SRV ammo only takes a skimmer down to 97% hull.

I really wanted to try this type of mission, but on reading (Google and Forums) I see that for well over a year the problems you all mention are still all there.
I feel that FD can't be bothered to fix any of the problems associated with planetary missions.

So long as you are within 1000km of Feynman Terminal, you will be in the zone of control or jurisdiction of Feynman Terminal.
Any POI with skimmers will then count towards the mission.

This needs to be explained in the mission briefing

This bug used to pester me, but I actually prefer doing these missions through hunting down POIs now. It allows me to do them without racking up a ton of bounties.

Gives me a purpose to flying around low, enjoying the scenery while scanning the planet... Also feels a little more like actual hunting then too.

Didn't realise we could do these by going to nearby POI. I've always shied away from them because I don't want to rack up bounties. I take it that if you find the targets in a POI that they are classed as "wanted" then?

I generally don't like to do any of the small surface base activities because they almost always result in getting bounties, usually 7 days worth. It then makes taking any other missions to that system, like cargo deliveries etc, a rather risky prospect. Oh and does nothing good for your reputation of course

Same goes for the private data points you find in POI's. Even if the skimmer patrol around it are wanted you still get a 400 credit bounty for scanning it, why? Who saw me, and if it belongs to a wanted criminal organisation what does it matter? Sure as eggs are eggs a bounty hunter will show up seconds after you get back to your ship to collect on your measly 400 credit bounty. It just makes doing stuff like that too much of a hassle, easier just to skip those missions and drive on by. The skimmers can be a pain sometimes too. You have to carefully make sure you select each one in the contacts list before opening fire, otherwise, ding 400 credits bounty for criminal assault, shortly followed by a 1000 cred reward for taking down a wanted skimmer, huh? It all still feels a little bit muddled and counter intuitive.

Yeah doing them through POI hunting has been able to get me through all my skimmer missions without a bounty since I started doing them that way... You do come accross the odd POI that has clean skimmers, but my experience has those being more the exception, & not the rule. When that happens I just leave them be & move on to the next POI that has all wanted skimmers.. Which so far for me have been most.

Yeah doing these missions at the specified bases had me stop doing them too for a while. The need to keep logging out & in to get the right number of skimmers was a real pain (especially if it meant needing to re-kill the defenses again). A couple of updates mentioned fixing these, but each time I got excited & checked they were the same.

Eventually I broke down & listened to the forum advice, and just hunted them down in the POIs... Definitely enjoying the skimmer missions again this way. No racking up a ton of bounties (which I already get some each week from undermining anyway), and the search for POI spots and scanning the skimmers make it feel more like a hunt anyway.
