Strong Signal Source 600 LY out

I bought a type 6 and just started to try some exploration.

About 600 LY out from Sol I see a Strong Signal Source on the scanner.

Haven't seen any signals for a while, and I'm way out there (I know you real explores will laugh at 600LY) so I thought it must have something cool in it, like an unidentified artifact.

I drop in.

There are 5 ships, 1 FDL, 1 Python and 3 Vultures.

At the same time I see them on the scanner, I discover my power distributor is too cheap to let me boost at all.

I was able to jump out, maybe there is a secret rebel base nearby?

I've just started exploring with a hauler, running out only about 1000ish LY myself. I've seen a bunch of USS, weak and strong sources but I was too nervous to check them out without any shields or weapons.

Odd that they still spawn in NPCs; I'd rather they increased the rarity by a great deal and made them spawn explorers or more exotic encounters.

Just had a very similar encounter around 600-700ly out on my latest trip as well. Except mine had something along the lines of 4 fer-de-lances and 2 Vultures and some other ships. Full power to engines and boosted like crazy and left them to their business.

Did you target them all, subsystem check to see if they had fuel scoops, and then ask them if they were cheating? I tried that with a Cobra in a Weak Signal Source about 300Ly out, but NPCs don't respond to cheat accusations apparently. :)

So is there a cut off point? If I trek out to 5000 LY, do the signals stop, or are they populated throughout the galaxy?

It tails off quickly after about 100Ly, but I think it's possible to see signal sources and NPCs up to 1000Ly away from the edges of populated space. I haven't been any further than you, and saw one Weak Signal Source (ma Cobra man) and one NPC Asp, both about 250-300Ly out IIRC.

The same for me, Im exploring right now and there are plenty of uss, strong, normal and weak, even more around planets (I like to take a closer look at the planets). Nothing interesting so far... just ships without faction and canisters with garbage...

This band of space is what I refer to as the badlands. They would be amazing if there was a consistent approach to generating ai out there, along with borderland (border system) missions to patrol these regions and seek out the crazed killers and hidden pirate bases.

It would be right up the Diamond back's alley.

By all means, there could be safer avenues that lead out of human space, marked on the galaxy map in some way. These would only be populated by bounty hunters and ai explorers. But the rest should be marked clearly as danger zones.

And they should be the most dangerous systems in known space.

And then these regions can shift based on background simulation and player actions.

FD fixed the occurrence of unlikely ship meetings in SC when away from populated space (thanks, its a great improvement), but overlooked those that spawn in asteroid belts and the different signal sources. Hopefully a later fix.
