Newcomer / Intro Struggling on Training Skirmish

Why is the fighting so damn hard on this game ?
Am using a keyboard and mouse, and setup following some of the videos about setting up the relative mouse etc
I can easily kill the single enemy in the training combat mission.
But completing the Training, Skirmish mission against 2 faster ships, is impossible.
I can never get them in my triangle on my radar to be able to shoot them.
Getting very frustrated if this is how hard combat is in this game now.
And I actually haven't even tried playing in the world yet, due to not been able to defeat these 2 simple ships.

Hi Tum,

sorry you're having a difficult time. Have you been diverting your power to the engines? When you aren't firing at them because they are outside of your firing arc be sure to move power to the engines to increase your turn rate. You can also boost to increase your turn rate as well as speed for a short time. Also, you may want to try using your maneuvering thrusters to aid you in getting them in your sites.

Lastly, make sure you are rotating and making the turn by pulling up or down, ie pitch, not yaw, as it is much faster.

Let me know if this helps!

keep your throttle in the blue area to turn better, set more power to the engines if you need even more turning rate.
and if you still have trouble getting them into your sight a quick on/off toggle of the flight assist might give you the extra nudge you need.

Hi,
Thanks for your reply.
Yes I followed a video about changing my power to engines and weapons, and ive been trying with full power to engines, and still I struggle getting them into my sights.
The controls with mouse and keyboard just seem so damn hard.
To pitch up and down, I constantly have to lift my mouse back to move it up again to keep pitching up, Else my ship just stops going up.
I try using the left and right thrusters A and D keys, but that doesn't help when am not getting the targets into my triangle and line of sight.
It seems to be made more for using joysticks and different controllers than a mouse and keyboard !

I'll be honest I never did that tutorial mission..... but in game i've not really been forced into a many on 1 fight so it's not that bad!

As far as combat goes the only tips I know are make sure your speed is in the middle of the blue bars when turning as this gives you the best turning rate.
Also you can pitch up and down faster than side to side so roll until the direction you want is on the vertical and push up or pull down to turn in that direction.
You can also boost while turning to turn quicker.
You can use the arrow keys to change the power distribution to your systems, so putting more in engines rechanges boost faster and gives you a higher top speed, putting it in systems recharges shields quicker, putting it in weapons recharges them quicker, so managing your power in a long fight is important.

If the ship you are fighting can turn faster than you then try boosting away and them coming at it from a distance, like jousting.

Edit: I see you are using mouse and keyboard, I changed my yaw to the x axis of the mouse and roll to A&D. For me that made it much easier to control the craft.

Hi, and thanks for your reply.
Yes I have my engines set at maximum power, and I have my throttle set to the top of the blue. But its the controls that's seems to be the problem.
I followed a video about setting up my mouse sensitivity etc, and set it to relative mouse etc, as without that my ship was just going out of control constantly.
But now I find, when trying to catch a ship on the radar etc, I push my mouse forward to pitch up, but I constantly have to lift my mouse and move it back a bit to push it forward to pitch up more, therefore stopping my ship constantly pitching up to catch the ships.

Hi,

you should probably tweak your mouse sensitivity a bit, but you can also try this.
i also use my mouse for freelook inside the cockpit and i needed a way to control my ship even when looking around.
so i set up my keys like this -
i got my W S and my default throttle controls just like normal, but i mapped it so that if i hold in SHIFT, W and S becomes my pitch up/pitch down instead.

maybe that can give you an idea of how you can set up your controls to alternative btw mouse and keyboard whit the help of +SHIFT or CTRL binds

Some of the training missions are actually harder than you are likely to find in the real game, unless you go looking for a fight. Plus you can always run away if things get to hot :D

The important one to do is docking.

Thanks, ill give this a go.
Yes I think I need the mouse to actually continuously pitch up or down when I move it that direction, not have to constantly pick the mouse up, move it back a bit, then pitch up again.
The keyboard mapping sounds better method.

YE, am gonna give this training skirmish a few more goes, then move onto the other training exercises, and try and get into game.
Else doing this same training mission is just going to really frustrate me !

Well I just completed the Training , Skirmish mission twice, really easy.
I did set my key bindings for ctrl w and ctrl s for the pitch but didn't use them.
What I did was, turned off the Relative Y Axis
And just left the Relative X Axis turned on, which helped stop me spinning to much.

Now that I'm thinking about it, you might also want to adjust your mouse settings in game. I haven't done this so please be patient with any errors. You should have a deadzone setting. If you lower it you may be able to move your mouse less before beginning your pitch, which might save you some of the travel. There may also be a relative/absolute type option that makes it less of a gradual turn and more constant turning so long as your mouse is up at the top. Play with the settings to see if you can get some traction there. Hopefully someone will chime in that is exclusively kb and mouse who can give you a definitive answer.

Also, I would suggest *considering* a joystick. Even a cheap one would probably get you far more enjoyment than you expect when compared to the keyboard and mouse. You can of course play however you are most comfortable, in whatever style you like, but for me, there is nothing like yanking back the stick to dodge away from incoming fire. I REALLY like my saitek x52 if you wanna try a hotas setup.

Last words, you might try shifting into reverse and pitching. In some situations this will get you on point faster than doing it forwards, like spinning the wheel as you back up in your car.

Let us know if you get this going the way you like, I'm sure you aren't the only one experiencing this.
