Newcomer / Intro Struggling with Ground Combat

Hi. I'm relatively new to Odyssey but not to ED as a game. I've been trying to complete some ground combat missions for a faction but they are almost impossible to complete.

I've chosen low threat level missions but the guns are completely useless. I've found grade 2 and 3 guns, however before I've taken down an NPC shield I'm swamped by enemies and my long flight to a system/planet all seems pointless in effort.

I use cover, hide in buildings, use a shotgun for quick takedowns but I never seem to have a good enough shield or gun to finish the job.

Are there any tips or guides someone can point me to? Any do's and don'ts? Should I upgrade my suit/guns before trying combat?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Learn to use batteries and med packs effectively. They are scattered across the settlement and indicated with icons.

Learn stealth takedowns.

Hit and run tactics also works good.

Lure enemies into corridors and use grenades.

Jump across roofs for longer range takedown. If you find a roof with no stairs access, you're golden.

Worst come to worst - use an SRV to wipe them out.

You don't mention what missions you're taking. Some you can Leroy Jenkins. Most will probably finish with you full of holes if you try that tactic, unless you have G5 gear and really understand how Ody ground combat works.

And you can always do the Ody intro mission again.

I've been known to forget turning shields on which can lead to a quick death. Also never stand still, always keep moving and the NPCs will mostly just miss you. Strafing left/right is a good tactic. And I guess there is also always the option to destroy scavs using missiles from the ship.

... hide in buildings...
Eek.

Don't hide in buildings.

Regardless of whether you are in a ground CZ or just in combat at a base, hiding in buildings is the single best way to put yourself into a bad situation where your exit is blocked by several NPCs. They can even physically block the exit (it's not a tactic; they're just really, really stupid and sometimes can't navigate when there are two or three in a doorway).

You can jump; NPCs cannot. While there are stairs onto most roofs, it takes a lot longer for the NPCs to climb them than it does for you to jump and use your jetpack. Height is a great advantage; exploit it. Keep moving. If you have a bad angle or you see them climbing the stairs, jump to another roof.

You are the only person who knows how to use a jump pack.
As stated roofs are an excellent position to control an engagement from. In particular the power centre roof which no NPC can access and gives you a nice spot to hide when pressed.
G3 gear is plenty for human combat and can be picked quite quickly.
The SRV is a good mini tank but keep at range while you can, the landing pad makes a good firing range. If all else fails pips to shield and run 'em over.

The training, as was mentioned, is also there for you. But also I recommend to do some ground combat zones. And in either of these scenarios you have more liberty to die and come back without a lot of overhead. (i.e. LEARNING)

Good luck CMDR Sithilis and good luck to all of us humans whose fate lies with your success!! :)

Thanks Commanders! Some great tips in here!

I watched some of the YouTube videos of people shooting from rooftops - which is great if you have a sniper rifle and scope. They also recommend shutting down alarm systems - which is fine if you've able to scan an NPC successfully and waltz in undetected.

I stumbled into a CZ once and it wasn't as bad as I thought because perhaps I wasn't the centre of attention.

In hindsight it's a learning curve on what triggers NPC's to attack. Also what gun loadout to use. I just get frustrated it can take 10-15 mins to accept the mission and travel to the destination only to find they don't like your aftershave and you're dead / mission over.

Back door to the Cmd centre is usually unguarded. Inside is a technician with lvl 2 clearance. Can be zapped and have their id cloned for access to security office.
Inside is a guard with lvl 3 clearance, same procedure applies. The alarm panel should now be right in front of you.

Yeah - a major downside with ground missions is the travel time.

If the mission is not one that fails if the alarm goes off (and you just want to learn the mission / layout) then running away and hiding while relogging can reduce this. You re-appear at the base (and if you haven't got a bounty then IIRC you will also be clean again), and can have another go. ofc you will then forgo any loot, but the mission target should be present.

You don't need the Executioner to use rooftops. You can peek over the edge of the roof and use whatever weapon you have. They make excellent hard cover.

The thrust of my advice is that hopping on to a roof lets you much more easily control the terms of the engagement.

I think the best weapon combo for non-stealth ground combat is the Aphelion to take down shields then switch to the AR-50 to rip through armor.

If you can engineer them, faster handling on each will allow you to swap weapons and ADC amazingly fast, so I would put that as #1 priority. Weapon swapping is very powerful.

#2 would be stowed reloading so that your stowed weapons automatically reload after 5 secs.

Beyond that it’s personal choice. I like range and mag size.

Aphelion/AR-50 lets you engage at longer range and thus get hit less.

If you want to engage at closer ranges, same mods on an Eclipse/C44 combo is also excellent, and is actually better for indoor combat.

I use a P15 for the #2 slot with similar engineering but that slot is not used much.

FWIW, my most used Dominator suit for CZ’s has (in my order of preference, and PVE only): extra battery capacity, extra ammo, night vision and faster shield regen.

Hope this helps.

Nah. Dual L-6es with optic, stowed reloading, magazine size and faster reload.

That's 30 missiles, enough to take out 15 Enforcers. If you happen to run out of rockets, a G5 Tormentor with magazine size, audio masking, faster handling and reload speed/noise suppressor tides you over until the reload is complete.

For myself I find I'm more likely to encounter a Cmdr on foot than in space.
For this reason I prefer night vision, quieter footsteps and an audio masked AR50.
