Newcomer / Intro Stuck at Mawson

Hello,
I (try to) play VR. I've now spent three and a half hours trying to press a button at the 'mowson dock'! The problem is: there is no mouse cursor, my keyboard up down keys work for selection only when from options i've chosen a none custom controller setup, and anyway, even if i manage to light up the right button (game prompting me to select 'auto mode' in the hangar), then i press Enter to apply the action which opens a chatbox and the button is not pressed. Then i press exit to go out of the chatbox and press enter again and the whole thing repeats, etc etc...lol a man can go mad between this and the 14 character password upon setting a new account!

There is no visible mouse cursor. The mouse seems to affect lighting up (but not clicking!) buttons on the options menu, though once in 3D hangar the mouse does nothing! They keyboard up and down keys turn completely passive once i chose mixed controls with joystick!

There is NO MENU for 'chat' in the controls menu. So that i can get rid of chat using the Enter key of my keyboard.
I use Steam and Windows Mixed reality headset which displays pretty nicely the hangar and can move my head 360pretty smoothly otherwise. I'm on windows.

Thanks Antz! The space bar works and actually I just found that I can navigate the menus with the AWDS keys! Finally it works!
I only don't know how to close this annoying chat window.
Also, I'm looking for a shortcut to reset the pilot head position in its place, once i had a vantage point from behind his neck.

Options -> Bindings or somesuch
There is a binding for resetting the hmd position, I've mapped it to the pinky button on my left stick.
Also: read the thread that's stickied at the top of the PC subforum about changing and saving your bindings file.

Try under options - controls - ship controls - mode switches. You can change the comms to another key besides enter. I am not sure whether I changed a setting but for me hitting enter a second time without any text takes me back out of the comms panel.

The keybindings are a whole mini game in elite. As Ashnak said back up your keybind regularly. I would tell you how to do this but I have no idea how :)

The learning curve in ED is very very steep, but worth the effort in my opinion.

This comes up so often that I think the new player's welcome blurb should have in gurt big flashing letters "NO MOUSE IN THE COCKPIT".

I mean seriously, most people don't know there is a manual, those that do won't read it anyway and let's face it the thing is years out of date.

IT's reassuring for me i'm not the only one :D Thanks for help!
BTW I managed to assign all sorts of controls to joystick and at least these go VERY smooth in menu! It almost feels like flying a real plane - I discover a strange phenomenon that what is immersive with the VR headset is not high resolution but the illusion of space, and for this, the game is very well done! (like your flag, i play the great highland and the small pipes,.. and watch a lot of Craig Ferguson on youtube)
