Stuck in solo mode?

Hello all.

I wonder if someone can advise me please?

I am starting the game in Open Play mode yet when I press the escape to enter the Options menu the message in the bottom centre of the screen says

"Current game mode: Solo"

Ive tried restarting but it always says solo mode.

Is this normal?

You always start in solo mode in the initial system. As soon as you jump you will be in open mode. Not sure if it is a bug or deliberate to allow new players to find their feet before getting into too much trouble from real players

Thank you for the replies.

Ive yet to leave the starter system since the latest update.

Ill take a trip to a neighbouring system and see what happens.
