Newcomer / Intro stuck with the federation?

Hi everybody!

I played a while in the federation space and made it to cadet.
now i would like to get rank in the imperium military. (friend of mine insited to help the imperium )
I'm allied with the Imperium and didn't find any missions for ranking up.

My question is, do i have to lose rank in the federation to gain ranks in the empire?
if so how can i lose my rank in the federation?
Or am i stuck being a federation pilot?

There is no problem with ranking up on both. You would think there would be, but they really don't not interact with each other at all.

I am more and more inclined to side with the feds. Everyone seems to shout about how cool the empire is all the time, which makes it uncool, and more like being a drow ninja assassin
