Elite / Frontier Stunning space/sci-fi pictures (Large Pics 56K users beware)

These have been obtained from the CGSociety pages found here: http://www.cgsociety.org/

They have nothing to do with Elite and have not been produced by Frontier Artists (as far as I know ) but I like pretty pictures and would like to see some planetside variation in E4 similar to these.

I completely agree - some very clever chaps/chapettes out there and once you've dabbled a little you start to realise how much work actually goes into these things. Full respect to these guys.

Sweet! Stunning artwork there man.
Rarely do I see anything that makes me dream myself into the painting, exploring and wondering what behind different objects, but these pictures have that quality. And I see lots of sci-fi art and models in my dayly job. Even the new Star Wars designs didn't do that for me...but lets now beat that dead horse again.
Could you give us some more directs links to where you found those things? I can see that Mark Goerner is responsible for some of the the painting though but finding them on the site is not easy.

WOW!!! that is some great artwork, great find there Steve O B Have. I be sure to be checking that link out later tonight. And that first pic with the high tec city in the background and the low tec natives in the foreground, god if they could do something like that in elite 4 where you could land at space port, get out of the ship walk around the city then go through a gate to the native settlement beyond.god just think about it.

Each of the artist then have a portfolio that you can click into to view their other work. You can find the button just under their name/avatar on the left.

can i put my contribute me too ?

there you will find some very intelligent guys that creates some very nice things for their RPG game Zaon.
I don't put directly images to not violate the copyrights. so go on their site
directly : https://www.zaon.com/

another place very interesting is this one:
http://www.desktopstarships.com/

may be someone just know it, is one of the best around for desktop images.

That first picture, in particular, is amazing. I've downloaded the 2500px version from the site; if it was a different shape I think it'd be my desktop wallpaper right now :)

I think as long as you give full credit and links to the source of the images there is not a copy write violation. You're not attempting to make money from them and are not claiming them to be your own.

I buy quite a few books based around this subject - some of the more recent ones have been "Mass Effect Limited Edition Art Book" and a few from Design Studio Press - my favorite ones being the Concept Design series and one called the Skillful Huntsman. Most of them are sketch books with some end result renders, but they are all fantastic to get lost in.

Some other ones worth looking at would be the art of Sparth who in my opinion is a genius of concept design:

It's the detail I find stunning, how the hell do they do it? I'm a bit artistic but  It must take hours.

Going back a really long way now - right back to my childhood when I found a book in the local library called "Terran Trade Authority - Spacecraft 2000-2100 AD" and got completely lost in the illustrations and stories behind them. I entirely blame Elite for this interest (and maybe a little bit on Blakes 7).

These were all hand painted back before the day of computer generated art by very talented guys with airbrushes. Since then the website below has been working hard to remodel and recreate the art faithful to the originals - I hunted down the books and now own them. Still really cool stuff.

Entirely - it's a mixture of using modeling tools like 3DS Max or Maya and then creating the textures for UV mapping (basically wrapping the textures around the 3d models) then they render them (typically taking hours if not days). They then typically transfer the final render into something like Photoshop and do the finishing touches in there. There are hours and hours of work in there and astounding talent.

Yeah Steve, the book that blew my mind and started me doing sci-fi drawings abnd building spaceships in cardboard, lego and what-have-you, was Chris Foss's book " 20Th Century Foss" by Paper Tiger.
His skill with an airbrush and pen is amazing ( for his day) and his colossal ships and decaying asymmetric striped design still makes me wish for a game that had ships like that, like brightly colored fish in coral reef. The hours studying and dreaming myself away in those pictures are countless :)

I do recognise his work - It's ended up on E E Doc Smith Books and some Isaac Asimov books as well. Excellent stuff. That makes two of us - hours spent doodling.
