Stupid Cargo

I don't mind small fines. I have lots of credits right now. But I was this || close to becoming friendly with a faction I've been working for, and poof, all that work went down the drain because of a stupid canister of silver.

So here's the backstory. I was attacked by a pirate while out minding my own business. Said pirate is now space dust, but he left behind some cargo. This cargo said nothing about "illegal salvage", so I grabbed it. When I went to sell it in the station, it did not show up in the commodities market for sale. Thinking this odd, I checked my inventory, and there it was, but labeled "stolen." Well, okay. The station I was at had no black market (which I've never used before), so I though I'd take a quick jaunt to the one next door so I could get rid of these "stolen goods". It was while leaving this station I was scanned and fined, and all my precious rep with my faction went up in smoke... GRRR!

Some someone(s) please care to explain the intricacies of salvage in this game? I clearly am not educated in this department...

salvage in space is always illegal, if you don't have a missions for it, in that case it might be legal (see mission detail description). the other option is a player abandoning cargo, but npc don't do that.

salvage on surface is always legal, if it isn't inside a trespassing zone (in which case it might be illegal or not).

1. You bring up a good point, who, what, where and how does one utilize the black market?

2. I did some research, TRY IT, see for your self and let me know, I've only been scaned once in the last three days after a hundred+ plus missions leaving a station. I utilize a full throttle and thruster the second I realize the exit is clear. Though I was successful, I've only been interdicted once in three days and it was during the same mission that I messed up on and got scanned when I left. Say what you want, but try it a dozen times and see. I'm practicing my entering with a winder which involves the same process of going fast into the station. Though I don't like using the docking computer, it works the best because sometimes your dock is right in front of the door. Problem is, though one can by pass the speed useing the DC, one can not turn it off and on at will.

3. When I arrive at the station, the first thing I do is 1) get paid, 2) check the commodity board and if there is any thing listed under cargo, besides the cargo I'm aware of going to my next stop, I sell it, now. 3) check for fines, 4) If I have money to spend, check the ship upgrades and purchase any item that warrents, some are hard to find, so if you find one you will need lator but not now, buy it, install it, put it in storage, reinstall the one you took out to install the one you wanted to keep for later. 5) check the mission board, mind you it refreshes every 10 minutes. 5) accept mission, go to next station, repeat.

If you are carrying illicit cargoes and dont want to be scanned at a spaceport/outpost,drop a heat sink and go Silent Running, line up with the entry box and cane it.You should be ok as the Spaceport wont get a "Fix" on you, think of it a bit like a Submarine that goes into "Silent Running" mode.

Very good, this is what I needed to know. Right now I'm grinding for faction rep (I need some Navy missions to someday get my Sol permit), so I'm just going to avoid space salvage. Like I said, I've got more credits than I need for the ships I'm currently flying, so I'll not get greedy the next time I see precious metals floating in space.

BTW, this system is dumb. If I kill a pirate carrying stolen goods, I should be able to retrieve those and bring them back to the station for a reward. Whoever originally owned that silver surely would like it back, not left floating in the depths of space. Frontier, please add this to the core gameplay improvement list you've been working on. Thank you :)

Any salvage from a pirate is illegal. The rationale is that they likely stole it from someone else so it's still considered stolen.

I agree, it is kinda dumb. The way it is now there is little incentive to salvage anything. I think some dropped cargo should be illegal (drugs or stolen goods etc) and other stuff should be ok. Space recycling could be a viable cash option in the early game.

The reputation shouldn't have gone down so much or you weren't even close before allied.
I'm allied with my faction and can kill several civilians or cops before loosing even one rep rank.
You haven't lost much, just keep going ;)

I am completely behind this idea...
