Proposal Discussion stupid idea to improve network performance

as the title say even i think this is a stupid idea but not necessarily a bad one.

being in dock looks to be where all the problems happen with network lag and time out issues, its often said by the MMO crew that ED needs to be fully hosted instead of P2P to avoid those issues but apart from anything else its cost prohibitive and may reduce the longevity of the game.

my idea is to get people to host stations for ED, and here is how.

there are plenty of people who like management games and things like the sims.

post release FD should begin work on a couple of those types of games based within the ED universe on space stations.

up front in the EULA would be the fact that by playing the management/sims style games you will become and integral part of the ED universe by 'hosting' a space station.

so, while your playing your game on the station your PC is acting as a server island for the pilots who are coming and going.

the sim players need have no impact on the game universe beyond that hosting, or interact with the pilots in any way; at least at first until the FPS expansion comes out.

connections could be assessed and the better ones would act as the server (maybe one of several) for the crowded systems in the core, while the slower connections could be utilised for the frontier worlds that may not see a lot of traffic.

doesn't really matter where they end up as the game they play needs to have absolutely no relevance to the station that they host (unless FPS ect.) and if enough copies of the game are sold lag, time outs and the like during busy periods would disappear almost overnight.

so, real stupid idea huh? :)

as always your thoughts on this are welcome :D

Interesting idea Andy .. Supernodes is the word you're looking for :)

yea, i finally figured if we have people asking for stockmarket sims to be added to the game and wanting to own a space station we may as well make use of them, games of that type can and do sell a fair few copies and any FPS assets that are created for the sims game can be reused in ED :D

From what I gather it already works much like this. The game entities in an instance are all "hosted" by one of the instances clients, including the station.

yup, but that's what's causing the problems, when the host logs out there are a few seconds lag while the server finds a new host, and people dont stay long at a station so it happens often. if people were playing a station commander in a sim they could end up leaving their PC logged in all day and night - i know left the machine running when i used to play sim city, i'm sure others did and would again if it was written right.

then you would have a more consistent host and less delays caused by constant switching.
