Stutter constantly and frame rate very low

I have scanned these forums and found many posts about stuttering but none seem to mention anything like mine, I get stuttering on initial loading of the screen with the sidewinder flying towards the station, it jumps across there in 1 second jumps and when the game loads into the menus I have a very very unresponsive cursor that lags badly getting to menus. When I can eventually navigate to "continue" the spinning ship goes round in small jerks and the game never loads right up to the point it says "orange sidewinder" error.
This just started to happen, one night it was fine the next it just doesn't want to know, only thing I did last was decide to take a look at Earth and docked with the Abraham Lincoln.

I have un-installed and re-installed the whole game but it does exactly the same, is there any way of getting ALL of the files relating to ED off the PC to start totally fresh?

Anyone any other ideas? I am about to just give up the game altogether which is a shame as I just spent 300 quid on a brand new HOTAS...

There are literally hundreds of possibilities and probably by now a thread for every one of them. Could you give us some basic info like your PC specs?

On a cold read this sounds like something causing memory to thrash, but that could be main memory or VRAM.

Or this also seems consistent with what happens when you have something weird going on with USB, either causing ghost inputs or causing the PC to spend the whole time dealing with nonsense coming from a USB port leaving very little time for rendering Sidewinders.

If you give us more clues, we'll get more ideas...

And whatever else, if you're on AMD GPU, update your drivers, per FDev's official advice for "Orange Sidewinder"

NVIDEA GeForce GTX 1660 Super, fully up to date drivers
Running game at 3840 x 1080 x 120Hz on superwide monitor

You may have hit the nail with the something is taking up PC processing time as this morning I have found it very difficult to open a browser window without it not connecting and a sad face on the browser, even though everything else shows a connection to the internet. After work today I may have to unplug everything not necessary to basic operation and see how it runs. Thank you for taking the time to reply.

Strip the pc back to just a keyboard & mouse. And don't use a USB hub just plug them into the pc.
Also default the bios.
Any overclocking wind back to default.
Then ingame drop graphics settings to low.
See how it runs then?
Then assuming it does run. Start introducing new settings and relogging after each one.
As for the hotas. Ensure it's plugged into an external powered USB hub.
Good luck!

You can not run this game at 3840 x 1080 on a GTX 1660.
Your CPU is also below par

You are playing horizons or Odyssey?

As the OP said, "one day it was working fine, then next it wasn't", there is nothing wrong with the model of GPU. It will run the game at lower quality settings.
It sounds like something has changed recently. Software or hardware change? It could unfortunately be malware or a virus. Open Task Manager and check for anything using high CPU or Memory.

It does that when another process is running in the background, like virus scan, Windows update of Chrome/Edge update. Have a look at your Task Manager to see what's hogging the resources. If it was caused by a setting, the game or your PC, it would be constant, not OK one day and not the next.

Indeed it will run it at lower quality, but it will be need to be really very low. Ultrawide at 3840 is already twice as much work as 1920x1080.

1920x1080 (ie, conventional HD 1080p) is already a struggle for Ascendancy on a 1060 GPU (source me, I have one, I am GPU-bound on foot and in the SRV, and I have a much better CPU than OP) so I agree with @GroG79, ultrawide 1080 on a 1660 is ambitious. The 1660 is nowhere near twice the pixel rate of a 1060.

OP has now mentioned he seems to have other issues outside of ED anyway, and I'm afraid to say there is another issue coming: the 24H2 update is now labelled mandatory by Microsoft as of this week. Since you say you even have problems with the browser I would focus on getting 24H2 onto your PC first before doing any more troubleshooting, otherwise you'll end up doing that troubleshooting twice.

Make sure your drivers and OS are updated. (Win 11 latest is 24H2).

Also 120 Hz & vsync might not like eachother. The Nvidia control panel has more (app-spesific) vsync options, try those.

Could be your graphics card is running out of memory, it has like 6 Gb?
Are you running full screen or borderless windowed? The latter may cost you a few fps.

Hi, just back in from work, I have unplugged everything from the PC and although the browser and everything that was affected are now fine ED is no different. I have reduced the size down to 800 x 600 windowed and the mouse cursor is no different, totally lagging and almost impossible to centre over any button. The game doesn't load fully and spits out the Orange Sidewinder error meaning it can't connect to the server. First off I am going to set up a ticket asking for my Cmdr to be moved as this is the advice if you have tried all other options which I have done.
Secondly I have decided that I need to upgrade the PC, not having shed loads of spare cash I could put a new one on my Currys/PCWorld account and I'm looking at this one...
option new pc I think this will do the job and it's about all I can afford. It has to hit the Currys account as that is where I have the spare credit so I can't really get one from anywhere else.
Any views on if I am making a mistake on this choice? I don't have many options except the Currys stuff up to £2200.

I've changed my mind, the other one wouldn't fit under my desk so I am thinking of this one... One that fits

I am not a fan of pre buildd but with those specs you should be good for the future!
Yeah I was a PC tech in a large Academy and I have built hundreds of PC's over the last 30 years but now in my mid sixties I find it difficult to get the old fingers working well enough to get fiddly parts together so pre-built is my only option. :)

You could find a refurb PC that is about the same spec as your current one except it won't have whatever weird problem is affecting it, probably for under £300. You should be able to play on that rig, seriously, it's faster than mine. If it's not even working at 800x600 there's clearly something wrong.

You could also consider a complete reinstall of Windows. Since you're willing to spend money why not spend £50 on a new drive, reinstall Windows onto that, and make ED the second thing you install. If it works then, you know where you are at, there's nothing wrong with the hardware, and all your data is on the old drive where you can still get at it.

If it doesn't work, well, you got a nice new SSD out of it, and you won't have to faff about with backups, you can just make the old drive your primary again.

It's a nice idea and I have seriously thought about it but I'm considering a few factors in the equation as well as just the ED problem.

This new PC will be the last one I buy before I retire and I have been working myself up to getting a much better machine to future proof for a few years.
My old PC is noisy with fan rattle on full load and they would need replacing as well, as I've said my fingers aren't as dextrous as they used to be, plus my eyesight is getting bad for close up work, so I find what used to be my old job (messing with PC innards) extremely frustrating these days.

...but mostly I have talked myself into getting a new rig (and the wife is onboard with it too) The ED problem was just the last nail in the coffin, oh and I have put in a ticket to have my Cmdr moved just in case that is the problem.

Might be a few weeks in getting the new one set up with what I need but there's nothing like that new PC feel without 6 years of clutter all over the place (too many folders with tat I'll never need or use again) I'll refrain from putting the six HDD's I have in the new machine, I have an external drive carrier that I can slot them in to find anything I should possibly need.
Sounds more and more like a breath of fresh air.... I'll post again when I have it all done, thanks for everyone's help.
George
