I'm currently flying under the imperial banner but with all the news that is coming out over the issue of the current emperor's condition and the infighting to take the throne, is there anywhere I can go to look at find out the list of imperial sub factions who I can gain a good standing with and increase my rank?

Doing missions for any local faction that has "Empire" allegiance will improve your standing with the Empire overall.

In terms of these fighting factions, there will likely be specific system events (like the slave revolt at Sorbago) where you'll be able to help one side or the other, but none of this has started yet as far as I'm aware.
