Sub-Surface Displacement Missiles: Pointless?

I'm struggling to find a reason to use. The high value ores are limited to deep core, and deep core imparts higher tonnage.

Is there really any reason to equip the titular tool over seismic charges and an abrasion blaster?

Even the old mining laser comes across as more useful.

I tried equipping a subsurface displacement missile launcher on a Type 6 once. 90% of the time they uselessly detonated a few metres in front of the ship. The other 10% of the time they lodged into the fissure but failed to drill out a fragment (even while I ensured the double brackets appeared on the aiming reticule).

I gave up on them sharpish.

If you don’t have an available medium hard point for seismic charges, I recommend simple mining lasers and abrasion blasters instead. Good enough.

On a smallish ships they can be just as fast as laser mining in a double painite or triple LTD hotspot.

Personally I think they should have made subsurface missiles throw out loads of materials -including some of the more rare ones.

That would have given them a real reason to exist, without trying to compete with the abrasion blaster and seismic charge launcher.

Most I've ever got out of a sub-surface fissure was 6t of something or other.

On that basis, it's probably a bit unfair to say the SSD launcher is "pointless" but, let's face it, you're probably not going to miss it if you remove it.

If you've got an agile laser-mining ship with a free C1 slot, it might be worth fitting one.
After all, if you're getting 5t of ore from an average 'roid, you might be able to double that by mining an SS fissure.
OTOH, if you struggle with the mini-game, or your ship makes it difficult to target SS fissures, it's probably better to ignore SS fissures and just go kill another 'roid instead.

I have the SSD launcher fitted to my mining AspXs and it does contribute to what I mine, but that's 'cos the Asp is agile so it is, basically, free credits for little effort.
I don't bother fitting them to my mining Python cos when I'm flying that I'm only interested in finding VOs.
I don't have one fitted to my mining T10 'cos it's too slow to target SS fissures easily and the C1 hardpoints are better used by fitting another mining laser.

So, limited usefulness rather than pointless.

I like how you put that.

And yeah. I'm only after the big money deep cores too. My Cobra can use SSDM very effectively.

But I never bother because VO, LTD & Painite.

Apologies OP for a slight derail, I kitted out some abrasion blasters. Once one ran out of ammo, they all did (obvious I suppose) but I cant synth more ammo, I have to return to base to buy it, is that right? It runs out real quick.

They're certainly the least useful mining equipment. I have one on the Python because there are enough hardpoints, but it doesn't get much use. But given several dissimilar bits of equipment, it's almost certain that one will be the least useful.
