Subnautica - Below Zero

Subnautica was one of the crafting/survival games that I actually liked - even though I pretty much hate that type of games. They are working on stand alone expansion now!

Looks tasty!

Yup, I've heard rumors about this one. I'm looking forward to it! I wound up liking Subnautica a whole lot more than I anticipated.

Sweet! I still play Subnautica even after over 100+ hours with it. I've played more Subnautica this year than Elite Dangerous, lol.

This will be a day one purchase for me, hands down.

First thing that comes to mind: I hope they make inventory management a lot less annoying and clumsy.

I liked Subnautica up to the point when I got to the hot zone deep down to keep it vague-ish for spoiler reasons, and then I just… stopped playing. Didn't even look back much. The game totally lost me in what suddenly seemed like a different game, way buggier, and really clumsy somehow.

I gave up too, but mostly because it became so claustrophobic and stressful towards the end.

Well, it's not a beach-tanning simulator. It's a survival game first and foremost.

That being said, I do appreciate the relatively peaceful shallows where one can just relax. But I didn't mind the challenge towards the end. :)

Subnautica is quite adept at letting the player set their own pace. If you want to putz around in the shallows you can - there's no real ticking clock or pressure to do something else. You're not forced into doing much beyond getting basic food and water (which, after a small amount of time, is fairly trivial). I appreciate that. I can set my own goals.

Well, technically you need to undergo some risk to obtain the ability to farm your own food (avoiding spoilers as much as I can). Then you can just sit back and enjoy the view for the rest of your life if you want.
But if you stuck with just fishing for food and water, you'd run out of fish after a couple of days.

Regarding pressure of a different kind, Subnautica does a pretty good job of giving you that feeling of claustrophobia that you just don't get in space or flight games. Pootling about in your little sub and staring down into the abyss, a place you cannot go (yet) is intense. Vacuum doesn't do that.

It still misses several tricks for an underwater setting though, mostly in sound design but in some visual elements and a generally arcade-y "flight model". With any luck they're getting inspired by SOMA for future development, because that game did a really good job at making one feel lost under water (and is generally a damn great game apart from some dumb decisions near the end where the designers just couldn't help themselves…).

So this is about to release to early access on the 30th. I'm stoked! :D

Now the question is....

...is it an early access like "Month long beta and then full release" or the same early access the original Subnautica had (several years of development and slow addition of features one at the time)

If the former, yay. If the latter, I'm probably not gonna live long enough to actually play it... :D

I'd hope the former, as they've already nailed most of the tech and whatnot from the first game. Could be wrong, though!
