The game subnautica have a very nice and simple implementation of vr support that works fine enough for a fps experience even though it never had support for motion controllers, that game still managed to win best vr game of the year. My suggestion would be: Let us enable 3d perspective on the flat screen an lock the screen to the camera, and lock vertical axys to the horizon. This could be a very inmediate solution to the VR inmersion issue with the flat screen. That's it. Awesome work you Devs did on odyssey.
