ED does not have subs like WoW or EVE. We do have paid expansion seasons but that doesn't preclude you from playing the game if you don't want to shell out for the new new.

Elite is "Pay to play", so to speak. You buy a base game, you can play forever. However there are seasonal "DLCs" with additional features and content. Right now there's season 2 (Horizons). If you buy it, you'll get all the updates season 2 contains (So far it's landing on airless planets, Engineers (modding of your ship), Ship launched fighters will be next, mid October and then there will be two more updates.
After that you'll have the option to either buy into a season 3 of expansions or continue happily with Horizons.

I likely would not have bought this game if it was a subscription. I much prefer buying the game with one payment and - done.

By the way, when`s the add-on for customising your character coming out?

Generally expected date of 2.3 is Christmas.

As others have already indicated, there are no subscriptions for Elite: Dangerous.

Simply buy the game and, if you want to, the Horizons Season (an optional DLC Expansion for the base game) then play.
