General / Off-Topic Subscriptions to play games

I don't know about you, but one type of game that I stayed miles away from were the types where you bought the game, but the only way you could play it was to buy time on a server through a paid subscription. I can't think of a title right now, but I think many of you will know what I mean.

The reason I stayed away from these was because you pay anywhere from $50-$60 to buy the game and them have to pay X amount of money to buy X amount of minutes play time because the only way you could was to play online. These games seemed to me to be a rental plan where you never really own what you initially paid for.

I think we can be quite sure Planet Coaster will never go there. :) Plus it is through Stream now too, we pay the price once, and that includes the server works for Steam too. They can't go back and ask for more.

I wasn't referring to Planet Coaster, I was referring to other games that came out in the past. I'm not entirely sure, but I think World Of Warcraft was one of them.

How so? I paid for Cities Skylines and don't have to pay extra to play it. We own Planet Coaster and the last time I looked, we won't have to pay extra to play it.

That may be true about Digital download games if you are referring to hard copies or games on disk, but you still don't pay extra to play them and in my book that is owning it. That being said, however there are a few that can be bought on disk such as Anno 2205.

That's not true if you go out and buy RCTW boxed copy you own pretty much nothing :O too soon hehe

RCTW is really the joke and the exception to pretty much prove the rule.
I don't know what the devs thought themselves when they released early access[blah]Did they think the game is that good,or did they just want to make quick money?
I know of a game called wizard101 where you have to constantly pay to get further[big grin]

Just a quick cash grab maneuver to wring as much money out of the gullible public as possible before (I believe) ultimately abandoning it.

To go back to topic:

Yes you are right. World of Warcraft is one of them. BUT this is not new. There were Online RPGs before. Like Dark Age of Camelot.

Well it is understandable that those kind of Games have a monthly fee. They are quite expensive to maintain and run. Yes there are versions of them with no monthly fees, but all of them have Shops where you buy stuff with real money. Often things that you really need in those kind of Games. These kind of Games are all the more sinister because they constantly pester you with it and show you at every opportunity how much better the Game would be if you bought these extra things.

Free to Play Games are Honey Traps. They prey on your weaker Moments. And also i hate DLC. Because oftentimes the Games get carved up and get sold in bits. But i like real Expansion Packs.

That was my point, when I first looked at World of Warcraft it was priced at about $50 which I would not mind paying if I didn't have to pay extra just to play it. I felt like even though I had the game on disk and installed on my computer that I would only be leasing the game from Blizzard Entertainment and never really own it. That is why I never got it. Thankfully I don't think this will ever happen with Planet Coaster since you can play it off line by going into the Steam off line mode.

Well the Offline Mode as i understand only makes you Invisible to your Friends, but technically the Client is still online. But nonetheless, Planet Coaster is unlike Elite Dangerous not a Online Game. Thankfully. I am very grateful they didn't make the mistake EA did with SimCity and try to force People to be Online to play a Singleplayer Game [rolleyes]. That was such a dumb decision. Even dumber when their claims made turned out to be false... [rolleyes][rolleyes][rolleyes]
