"I remember well the gloom of those echoing caverns on that distant moon. My torchlight playing upon the walls. The horrors and the wonders the light revealed."
Whilst exploring planetary bodies, cave mouths might be discovered:
- Large Cavern Systems, e.g. empty volcanic tubes, would be explorable in vehicles.
- Small Cavern Systems, e.g. sites of prehistoric habitation, would have to be explored outside of vehicles.
Rewards:
- Minerals, metals - could be mined.
- Archaeological finds - could be photographed - and the photographs sold to scientific organisations.
- Underground dwellings. This could range from lone survivor caves with sorry tales to tell; to secret research bunkers; to slave camps; think Mad Max style settlements.
Cavern systems might also be flooded or aquatic.
Cavern systems would typically be dark, dangerous places requiring 'slow and careful' exploration, as opposed to the 'fast reconnaissance' style that could be enjoyed on the surface. Hasty exploration could result in cave-ins and mishap. Not to mention pirate dens are notoriously booby-trapped...
Additional suggestion: Verticality gameplay might also be introduced as cavern systems often include vertical shafts. Rather than low tech rope, the explorer uses a jetpack.
